Farmer's book, commonly known as "cause and effect" in the old days. It is said that it began in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, and has a history of more than 400 years. In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, it was widely circulated in the Jiangnan area, such as Jinshan, Shanghai, Wuxi, Jiangsu, Pinghu, Zhejiang, and Jiashan. Jiashan farmer's book was originally spread from Jinshan, Shanghai. After being sung by several generations, it gradually developed into a kind of song. Most of the singers were half farmers and half artists. Farmer's book only has a cymbal to play the accompaniment, making a "tete" sound, so it is also called "tete book". Jiashan farmer's book is a folk singing art that is loved by men, women, old and young in rural areas. Its specific performance form is: a small table is placed in front of the performance stage, surrounded by red cloth, and tea cups, folding fans, wake-up sticks and other objects are placed on the table. One person performs, the performer wears a long gown, holds a cymbal, and beats the accompaniment with bamboo chopsticks. There is both speaking and singing, mainly speaking, and you can sing whatever you see. The performance generally consists of an opening and a main text. The opening is pure singing, mainly self-compiled, and there are also opening books; the originals are generally historical stories and folk legends circulated among the people. The singing tunes are rich in local characteristics. In addition to the commonly used tunes of the school, such as "long tune", "slow tune", "urgent tune", "crying tune", etc., there are also a lot of folk tunes and field songs, which are slightly adapted and interspersed in them. The colloquial language is catchy and the harmony is pleasant. Jiashan peasant book has simple props and diverse forms. There are both speaking and singing, humorous, and both young and old can enjoy it. It can be performed anytime and anywhere. After the founding of New China, peasant book artists studied and performed in an organized manner, and were active in farmers' homes, fields and teahouses all year round. However, due to the lack of a fixed system and fixed income, they gradually faded out at the end of the 20th century. Now there is only Shi Yufa (born in 1933) from Huimin Street. He is too old to perform on stage, and Jiashan peasant book is on the verge of being lost. Jiashan peasant book has been included in the third batch of Jiaxing City's intangible cultural heritage list.
