There are dragon boats in every township in Wenzhou, and every temple has an incense official god who is in charge of rowing dragon boats. During the Dragon Boat Festival, some places have to make new dragon boats. On the first day of April, drums are beaten to open the temple gates, and the incense official god is offered to start boat building. The custom in various places is generally to open the temple gates on the first day of May, and rowing begins after offering sacrifices to the gods, which is commonly known as "going on the water". The return of the dragon boat is called "collecting incense". The end of the dragon fight is called "scattering the river" or "washing the lane". The river dragon boat is turned over and turned right again the next day. It is carried to the temple for preservation and the official god of time is offered. It is said that the incense official god is a child god who likes to play tricks on people, so the saying goes that young people are restless, which is a metaphor for the incense official. In the dragon boat rowing area, the dragon boat fee must be paid, the dragon boat rowers must be invited to drink, and firecrackers must be set off and offerings must be set up to welcome them, which is called "setting up the incense table". Some have dragon scales painted on the hull, and movable dragon heads and tails are placed at the head and tail. The shape is smaller. Some have a few strokes of dragon scales painted on the hull, and there is no head or tail, but the shape is larger. Each dragon boat in each village has a flag of a fixed color. If there are several dragon boats in a village, they should also be distinguished by flag colors. Take the ancient customs of Nantang River in the southern suburbs of Wenzhou as an example. Some flags are blue, and the dragon head, dragon tail and boat body are all blue, which is called "Qinglong". According to legend, only the seven stars of the Eastern Azure Dragon are called dragons, so blue is the main color. On the surface of Nantang River, Xincheng is the river master, so the dragon boat of Xincheng Dongtang Temple is particularly large, with 16 stalls and 44 people on the boat. It is called Daqing, which is considered the dragon lady. Other dragon boats must first go to Dongtang Temple to pay homage. The temple steward will reward them with colorful red. When Daqing comes out, other dragons dare not compete with it. The rest of the small ones are called Qinglong, and the other yellow ones are called Huanglong. The flag is white, and the boat is also white, commonly known as "Bailonger". If it is a red flag, the boat body is also dyed red, called "Hongniling", etc. Because the southern dialect means red, it is a water dragon with an impatient temperament, so the name was changed to avoid taboos. There is only one black dragon among the dragon boats. It is said that the black dragon is ferocious, and some say that the northern black tortoise is a tortoise, crawls slowly, and cannot fight. Therefore, there is no black dragon boat in Wenzhou. Two boats race, the water follows the waves, and the two dragons fight for the championship. Each township river is divided into sections and each area is its own. The dragons do not interfere with each other.
