Dragon boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are a traditional sports competition with a long history in Shaokou and Baijia, Wan'an County. There are dragon boat races in all places along the river in Wan'an County. According to the earliest county annals of Wan'an County, the "Fangyu Zhi" chapter of the Wan'an County annals revised in the 12th year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty, it is recorded that "it is said that when Emperor Shun went on a southern tour and played Shao music here, thousands of birds gathered around, and the music and birdsong were harmonious, and all the mountains echoed, so the Shao River was named Shaojiang, and there was an old Shun Temple with ancient relics." "The Dragon Boat Races during the Dragon Boat Festival are only held in Shaokou, Baijia". According to legend, the Wan'an Dragon Boat Races were initiated by local people in BC to commemorate Emperor Shun's southern tour to Shaokou, playing Shao music to kill the evil dragon and pray for peace and prosperity for the country and the people, and have continued to this day. During the "Cultural Revolution", the Dragon Boat Races during the Dragon Boat Festival were regarded as "Four Olds" and suffered devastating damage, and the activities were interrupted for a time. It was not until the 1980s that the activities were gradually resumed. The Wan'an Dragon Boat Race consists of three parts: "Dragon Boat Launching", "Dragon Boat Race", and "Sending Off the Gods and Collecting the Dragons". It is held during the Dragon Boat Festival every year. The event is spontaneously organized by the people of Shaokou and Baijia, and is endowed with many cultural characteristics such as traditional festivals, sacrifices, competitions, skills, food and music. For example, "Dragon Boat Launching" and "Sending Off the Gods and Collecting the Dragons" have grand ceremonies of worshipping ancestors and gods; "Dragon Boat Race" has scenes such as winning the bid, firing three consecutive guns, shouting dragon boat calls, beating dragon boat drums and victory drums. During the race, there are also special "Dragon Boat Meals" such as eating "Wu Zi" and drinking wine. The event conveys the spirit of unity and hard work of the villagers, and contains the deep meaning and deep feelings of drinking water and remembering the source, and worshipping the ancestors and gods. It is a form of entertainment for the gods and people for the locals to achieve the purpose of worshiping the gods and ancestors, praying for blessings and eliminating disasters. This activity is well-known in the local area and is very popular. It has also attracted many people from other places to come and watch and cheer. It has greatly enriched the festival cultural activities of the local people, created a lively festival atmosphere, and played a huge role in promoting local folk exchanges, enhancing mutual trust, and prospering trade. The social effects generated by this activity and its own cultural connotations, scientific research value, and historical value have great significance for inheritance and protection. In 2012, this traditional sports project was included in the city-level intangible cultural heritage protection list by the Ji'an Municipal People's Government.
