🎧  Listen to Introduction

The production of pottery in my country has a history of at least tens of thousands of years. The production of pottery originated in the Yellow River Basin. From the Peiligang culture to the Yangshao culture and the Dahankou culture, it is not difficult to find that the earliest workshops producing pottery in my country are spread all over the Yellow River Basin, such as Henan, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Shandong. Therefore, these pottery are collectively called Yellow River Ancient Pottery. Hebi City is located in the Central Plains and was once the capital of Zhao. The ancient Yellow River runs through the territory, and the cultural heritage is profound. Historically, there were many pottery kilns in Hebi. The archaeological excavation of the Dalaidian pottery kiln site belongs to the typical Yangyun culture, which is an ancient art heritage with unique local colors. The pottery industry has been popular as an industry for nearly three thousand years. In the late Qin and Han Dynasties, the emergence of porcelain caused the pottery industry to gradually decline. In a real sense, the Yellow River Ancient Pottery technology has been lost since the late Han Dynasty, forming a gap and discontinuity in history. In the past decade, with the strong support of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the China Ancient Pottery Museum, and with the direct participation of many historians, archaeologists, and cultural relics collectors, the potters in Hebi City have finally developed the quaint Yellow River pottery after careful excavation and research and thousands of experiments. Today, the Yellow River pottery we see has boldly used new techniques such as relief, high relief, and hollowing on the basis of fully inheriting the traditional handcraft techniques. The color breaks through the traditional gray, red, and black colors, and uses high-tech technology to bake out orange, stone blue, imitation bronze, stone tablets and other colors, giving this ancient art that has been lost and discontinued for nearly two thousand years a new life. Hebi has been a place for producing Yellow River pottery since ancient times. As early as more than 6,000 years ago, a large number of exquisite ancient pottery were unearthed here. Vessels such as tripods and urns were once selected as tribute to the palace. Historically, pottery kilns were spread throughout Hebi and there were many potters. The Dalaidian pottery kiln site unearthed by archaeologists belongs to the typical Yangshao culture. The Yellow River ancient pottery has a fine texture, exquisite patterns, antique fragrance, and vicissitudes of life. It is well-known at home and abroad for its unique artistic characteristics. It has become an indispensable cultural name card of Henan Province and a gorgeous wonder in the ceramic art world. The Yellow River Valley Waves are made from the clear mud of the Yellow River Ancient Road, which is washed, stored in a cellar, pounded, wheel-made, carved, and bred using the oldest firing method. Artistic characteristics The Yellow River ancient pottery has beautiful shapes, fine texture, clear texture, and smooth lines. It is a collection and gift that integrates carving and painting. The Yellow River ancient pottery is elegant and simple, and has vicissitudes of life. The elegant and beautiful relief pictures and the mysterious and wonderful exquisite patterns seem to be telling people today a moving legend that makes people imagine and recall, and embodies people's good wishes. Representative works include the auspicious dragon bottle, the four-image bottle, the three-ram statue, the longevity bottle, etc. The large-scale Nine Dragon Wall made in 2007 is the pinnacle of the history of ceramic art. The Nine Dragon Wall is 26 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. The nine dragons on the wall are lifelike and echo each other. It overcomes the shortcomings of the Nine Dragon Walls in other places in my country, such as the rigid and uncoordinated dragon postures. It can be regarded as a model of the existing Nine Dragon Walls in my country. Gold has a price, but pottery is priceless. The Yellow River pottery is a precious cultural heritage left to us by our ancestors and the refinement of national culture. It has a glorious history and the sadness of generations. However, it has been magically reproduced by the dexterous hands of potters. It is precisely because of the wisdom of many skilled craftsmen that the Yellow River ancient pottery can be developed and continued to this day. It is our responsibility for the role art institution to carry forward the legacy of our ancestors and promote national culture. In promoting and popularizing national culture, we hope that the Yellow River ancient pottery, an artistic wonder, will bloom more brilliantly and colorfully. In 2009, the Yellow River ancient pottery was included in the second batch of intangible cultural heritage protection list of Henan Province for its simple production process.
