Shadow play is a performance form of Daoqing opera, and people in Lingbao call it "poking skin". Shadow play originated from Emperor Wu of Han. "Han Shu Wai Qi Zhuan" says: After the death of Lady Li, the wife of Emperor Wu of Han, Emperor Wu often missed her. His subordinate Li Shaoweng tried to let Emperor Wu see Lady Li. He set up a curtain at night and asked Emperor Wu to watch from a distance. Soon, Lady Li's shadow appeared in the curtain. Later generations used thick paper or leather silhouettes to borrow light, which evolved into shadow play and passed down to later generations. In Lingbao, because most of the shadow puppet artists sing the stories of Laozi, the ancestor of Taoism, Lingbao people respectfully call it Daoqing, also known as "Daojing" and "Eight Immortals Music", and call shadow puppet artists Daoqing masters. Lingbao Daoqing music is vivid and unique, and the performance style is delicate and slightly rough. Its distinctive characteristics are inseparable from the instruments used by the artists. The traditional instruments of Daoqing mainly include four strings, jade flute, moon guitar, fish drum, simple board, hand board, and touch bell. It is said that these are the instruments used by the legendary Eight Immortals. Later, the Yueqin was replaced by the Sanxian, the Yuxiao was replaced by the Qudi, and string instruments such as the Erhu were added, but the characteristic instruments such as the Sixian, Yugu, and Jianban were still retained, and their playing styles have never changed. "One mouth tells the story of the ages, and the hands dance with millions of soldiers." Shadow puppetry, a folk art of the "national essence", has a history of more than 2,000 years. In the 1990s, under the leadership of the artist Suo Xinyou, Lingbao Daoqing Shadow Puppetry participated in the Wutaishan International Tourism Festival, the China Zhengzhou International Shaolin Wushu Festival, and the First Henan Quyi Festival. In 1993, Suo Xinyou was awarded the title of Folk Shadow Puppet Artist by Henan Province. In 1996, Suo Xinyou and others went abroad for the first time and were invited to perform in Paris, France, winning reputation for the national art of the motherland. During the National Day in 2003, Lingbao Daoqing Shadow Puppetry artists were invited to perform in the Yellow River Folk Custom Scenic Area of Mangshan, Zhengzhou City for a month. "Thousands of years of history in the palm of your hand, driving millions of soldiers." Lingbao Daoqing shadow puppetry carries the ideals of generations of shadow puppet artists and has shocked people's hearts countless times. The rescue of this rare drama is receiving more and more attention. We believe that as long as we don't give up, Daoqing shadow puppetry will be carried forward again and bring glory to China!
