🎧  Listen to Introduction

Lingyuan shadow puppetry is an important branch of northern Chinese shadow puppetry, which is said to have a history of more than 300 years. In the process of inheritance and development, it has formed a distinct artistic style and unique artistic charm. The shadow puppets are exquisitely carved, the manipulation performances are vivid, and the singing is unique. In 1996, the Ministry of Culture named Lingyuan City as the "Hometown of Chinese Folk Art (Shadow Puppet Art)". On September 17, 1999, when visiting the thousands of shadow scrolls collected in Lingyuan, He Jingzhi, the former Minister of Culture, said: "Lingyuan's shadow scrolls are the best in the country." Lingyuan shadow puppetry is not only well-known in the local area, but also has a great influence at home and abroad. It has won the championship in provincial and municipal shadow puppetry performances many times, and has performed special performances for central leaders and international friends. CCTV and Liaoning TV have filmed many TV works in Lingyuan, including "Bitter Shadow Play", "Visiting Shadow Play in Lingyuan", "Shadow Scroll Fans" and the drama packaged shadow play "Flame Mountain". Among them, the TV special "The Charm of Light and Shadow" was selected to be sent to foreign embassies and consulates, and "Shadow Dance" was selected to participate in the Sino-French cultural exchange activities in 2004. Lingyuan shadow play is a pure folk art. Although it had a heyday, there were 120 self-entertainment, semi-agricultural and semi-artistic, and professional shadow play troupes in the city. However, due to the impact of modern culture and the death of old artists, Lingyuan shadow play art has no successors, and it is urgent to rescue and protect Lingyuan shadow play.
