Henan Opera

Henan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Henan Quju, also known as "Gaotaiqu", was formally developed around the 1920s on the basis of Henan Quzi and stilt walking. Originally, the accompaniment instrument was only the pendant, but after the performance on stage, the quhu, sanxian, soft bow jinghu, hand board, sheng, guzheng, erhu, pipa, etc. were gradually added, and martial arts instruments also appeared. Quju has beautiful tones and many singing tunes. Commonly used ones include [Matou], [Yangdiao], [Chajiang], [Shipian], [Qingjiang], [Yinniusi], [Manjianghong], etc. According to the needs of the plot, a tune can be formed into a singing method with different emotions through special performance techniques. For example, there are more than a dozen singing methods of Yangdiao, such as general Yangdiao, crying Yangdiao, happy Yangdiao, angry Yangdiao, and old Yangdiao, and there are two singing methods of Shipian, hard Shipian and soft Shipian. This is the biggest feature of Quju singing art, which is extremely rare in other operas. The themes of Quju are generally folk stories, family life and love between men and women. It is good at performing tragedies and small comedies. The singing and speaking are easy to understand, with a strong local flavor and rich life interest. After decades of development, a number of representative plays have been accumulated, including "Hu Erjie Opens a Shop", "An An Sends Rice", "Xiaoguandeng", "Beating the Kitchen God", "Li Huozi Divorces", "Chen Sanliang Climbs the Hall", "Rolling the Mat Tube", "Wind and Snow Pair", "Kou Zhun Carrying Boots", "Going to the Countryside", "Catching", "Touring the Countryside", etc. Famous actors include Zhang Xinfang, Wang Xiuling, Gao Guizhi, Hai Lianchi, Ma Qi, etc. Quju is the second largest opera in Henan. In addition to Henan, it is also distributed in Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu and other provinces. It has been created and performed until now, and is deeply loved by the audience because of its natural and humorous style and close to life. However, its reserve force cannot make people optimistic. There is a lack of good successors and no special training institutions. In the general downturn of local operas, selecting good talents, cultivating excellent actors and fixed audiences, exploring mature market operation methods and strengthening publicity are the fundamental strategies for the survival and development of Quju, and they need to be implemented seriously.
