The Legend of Xu You and Emperor Yao
Xingtang County is located in the southwest of Hebei Province, facing the provincial capital to the south, Beijing and Tianjin to the north, Taihang Mountains to the west, and North China Plain to the east. 16 kilometers northwest of the county seat, there is a village named Xuyou, a mountain named Jishan, and a river named Yingshui. The scenery is beautiful and the legend about Xuyou and Emperor Yao happened here. According to legend, in ancient times, Emperor Yao, the leader of the Kyushu tribal alliance, wanted to abdicate to a wise man because of his old age. Xuyou was a famous scholar at that time, so Emperor Yao found him and wanted to give up the throne to him. Xuyou did not accept Emperor Yao's abdication, hid under Jishan, on the sunny side of Yingshui, farmed and lived in seclusion. Legend has it that Emperor Yao gave the world to Xu You, who thought it was a shame and went to the stream to wash his ears. Chaofu led a cow to the stream to drink water, and when he saw Xu You washing his ears, he asked the reason and said, "You use this stream water to wash your ears, but I'm afraid that the water will dirty the cow's mouth!" Then he threw the gourd used by the cow to drink water off the cliff and led the cow away. Later generations engraved this question and answer between Xu You and Chaofu on a stele, named "Chaofu Question and Answer Stele", and named the stream where Xu You washed his ears "Washing Ears Stream" and the place where Chaofu threw the gourd "Abandoning Gourd Cliff". After Xu You's death, in order to commemorate his noble character, people built Xu You V, Xu You Temple, Xu You Statue, and Xu You Pavilion on Jishan Mountain, renamed the village where he lived as Xu You Village, and built a large-scale Xu You Temple covering nearly 100 acres for him next to the village. Most of the above buildings have been destroyed due to their age, and only the ruins remain. In history, a large number of classical historical books, such as "Classic of Mountains and Seas", "Records of the Grand Historian", "Zhuangzi", "Essentials of Geography", "Biographies of Eminent Scholars", etc., have written records about Xu You's refusal to abdicate and his seclusion in Jishan. In the "Xingtang County Chronicles" during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, there are also detailed maps of Jishan Yingshui and Xu You's viewing map. In 1761, Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty toured Mount Wutai and stayed in Xingtang. He visited Jishan and wrote four poems "Ode to Jishan" to comment on Xu You. The "abdication system" that began with Emperor Yao was the earliest sprout of democracy and reflected the long-standing political civilization of the Chinese nation. Xu You pioneered the hermits in China and was called the "ancestor of hermits" by later generations. Zhuangzi, Tao Yuanming, Li Bai, Su Shi and others in later generations were all influenced by him. Xu You's noble character of refusing to abdicate had an important influence on the formation of Chinese hermit culture and even Taoist culture, and became part of the traditional Chinese cultural spirit. The hermit's thoughts, interests and feelings formed since Xu You, such as humility, indifference to fame and fortune, return to nature, and hard work, have been respected and pursued by intellectuals of all generations and have become the spiritual source of generations of Chinese intellectuals.
