Yifeng Archway Lion Dance
Yifeng Pailou Shenshi Dance (the third batch of provincial level) Pailou Shenshi Dance belongs to the southern lion dance, which originated in Pailou Village, Chengtang Town, Yifeng County, Jiangxi Province, and spread and flourished in the village. It is a rare folk dance in the southern region that combines multiple art forms. It has a history of more than 600 years. The origin of Pailou Shenshi Dance is quite legendary. According to the "Yifeng County Chronicles" and "Zhou Family Tree", Pailou Shenshi Dance is said to have been created by Zhou Zhiwen, the ancestor of the lower branch of the village, in 1387. Every year from the tenth to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the villagers will invite the lion to parade in the village. When the lion parades in the village, 100 magic guns lead the way, followed by a flag and umbrella team of more than 100 people. Amid the sound of drums and music, the "Tudigong" wearing a yellow hat, Nuo mask, yellow clothes, and holding a dragon head stick and a broken cattail leaf fan danced and walked, waking up the two sleeping lions. The stilt team followed closely behind, performing martial arts routines and boxing techniques such as knives, guns, swords, and sticks. The Tang monk and his disciples behind wore Nuo masks, walked and danced to the beat, and there was a small wind and percussion performance at the end. The performance scene was very spectacular and was deeply loved by the masses. The archway lion dance contains unique sacrificial and blessing customs, and relatively completely preserves the totem beliefs and fertility worship customs of ancient times in southern my country. On the tenth day of the first lunar month, the villagers have to go to the ancestral hall to invite the lion down, and the village elders will wash its face with a new towel, and then place it on a shelf in the main hall of the ancestral hall for 5 days for people to worship. During this period, those who want to have children can go to the copper bell under the crotch of the lion (near the genitals), take off a strand of ramie and take it home, and hang it on the bed door to fulfill their wish. After the birth, the pilgrims must return the ramie to the lion after dyeing it several times, and give a pennant to fulfill their wish. The Pailou Lion Dance focuses on "dance and music" and integrates a variety of folk arts, including Nuo dance, high-foot opera, martial arts, small blowing and beating, etc. It has a large lineup and extraordinary momentum, with more than 300 participants and more than 30 main performers. Such a large lineup is extremely rare in lion dance.
