🎧  Listen to Introduction

The "Xiping Pan Drum" in Shangmo Township was created to commemorate the ancient Shangmo man Wu Gongwan of the Southern Song Dynasty who led troops to defend the country and was named Zhaotao Envoy by Emperor Gaozong of Song. He led troops to guard the territory of Shangmo Township and was named "Xiping Village". The Xiping Pan Drum was a war drum used to boost morale and inspire fighting spirit during battles. Due to its brisk rhythm and emotional expression, it was widely accepted by the people and became a folk custom. The inheritance has lasted for more than 900 years, but it was interrupted due to wars and other reasons, and some of the content has been lost. The Xiping Pan Drum we are performing now was compiled through the research of various experts on the remaining drum scores and combined with the memories of the elderly. The pan drum performances popular among the people in "Xiping Ancient Village" are warm, rough, bold, and fast-paced, with clear distinctions between strong and weak. They are themed on war, regulated by struggle, and commanded by flags. They move with the rhythm, have distinct main melodies, and are full of flesh and blood, character, bones, tendons, and characteristics. Humanity and music coexist, and spiritual culture coexists. Both in terms of music and dance, they have strong artistic expression and appeal. Xiping pan drum is divided into four parts, which are completed in one go, basically reproducing the whole process of war from expedition, battle, triumph, and celebration. (Narration) Expedition: The flag was waved, the drummer was excited, and the drums shook the sky. The soldiers were courageous and powerful, and their morale was high. Battle: The soldiers fought bloody battles, the two sides crossed their weapons, the war was stalemate, the soldiers beat the drums vigorously, and the sound waves were layered. Triumph: Victory on the battlefield, returning home in brocade clothes, the villagers lined the streets to welcome, and the soldiers' faces were filled with smiles of victory. Celebration: The army and the people are united, and the whole world celebrates together. Everyone sings and dances around the "general", celebrating today's victory and praying for a better life tomorrow. It means that we will work hard around the central leadership with General Secretary Xi Jinping as the core to realize the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
