🎧  Listen to Introduction

The main origin of Wan'an Tea Picking Opera is the "lantern opera" from southern Jiangxi in the 19th century. It is a local opera formed by Wan'an folk artists learning to sing from the masters of the "lantern opera troupe" or going out to learn from the masters, and then accepting apprentices to teach the art and forming a troupe to perform. Since Wan'an Hakka culture has the same origin as southern Jiangxi, Wan'an Tea Picking Opera also follows some of the tea picking styles in southern Jiangxi with Hakka flavor as the main body, but it is different from southern Jiangxi tea picking in terms of transitions, performances, singing tunes, stage style, etc., thus forming a unique tea picking opera. It has gone through a glorious journey of more than 200 years. Wan'an Tea Picking Opera mainly consists of three parts: tea picking opera repertoire, tea picking opera performance, and tea picking opera music. Wan'an Tea Picking Opera repertoire mainly includes: traditional drama repertoire, such as "Looking at the Girl", "Seeing the Girl at the Age of 49", etc.; costume drama repertoire: such as "The Love of Liang Zhu", "Choosing a Son-in-law", "Tears in the Land of Lovesickness", etc.; modern drama repertoire: such as "Female President", "Transition in Disguise", "Jinggang Mountain", "Splitting the Mountain to Capture the Dragon", "Spring on Campus", etc.; triangle class repertoire: such as "Repairing Leather Shoes", "Looking at the Water to Tell Fortune", etc. Regardless of whether it is a big play or a small play, it is performed by two female roles and one ugly role. There is a saying that "three roles make a play, and the clown is the master". There are few characters and convenient actions, which provide favorable conditions for the widespread spread and rapid development of tea picking opera. Up to now, Wan'an Tea Picking Opera Troupe has performed nearly 200 documented plays and won nearly 100 awards of various types. In the performance of the traditional repertoire of Wan'an Tea Picking Opera, the dwarf step, the fan flower, and the single sleeve are the "three elements" of the performance art of Wan'an Tea Picking Opera. The "three elements" are coordinated with each other, used comprehensively, and run through the whole process to achieve the purpose of rendering the environment, portraying characters, and expressing the content. The traditional tunes of Wan'an Tea Picking Opera mainly consist of vocal tunes, gongs and drums, and suona tunes. According to their origin, style, string path, mode and usage, they are divided into four categories: "lantern tune", "tea tune", "road tune" and "miscellaneous tune", commonly known as "four tunes". Wan'an Tea Picking Opera has a long history, unique form and strong local color. It is the spiritual wealth created by Hakka predecessors, a precious Hakka cultural heritage, and an important part of Gan culture. Its unique academic value and practical value have great significance for inheritance and protection. In 2012, this traditional drama was listed in the municipal intangible cultural heritage protection list by the Ji'an Municipal People's Government.
