The Legend of the Dead Peony
The protection and inheritance of dead branch peony is a folk literature project in the first batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage. In the autumn of 2010, the historical and cultural legends of Yancheng dead branch peony were applied for the intangible cultural heritage project of Jiangsu Province. The dead branch peony has a long history of more than 730 years. It began in the late Song Dynasty and the early Yuan Dynasty. It has experienced the change of dynasties. It was burned into dead branches by fire in the Tang Dynasty. It was destroyed by war in the Republic of China. It has been prosperous and flourishing. Now it has lush roots and leaves, beautiful and fragrant. It contains the hardships of countless flower planters and flower protectors. It represents the respect and inheritance of historical humanities, and also represents the protection and development of peony culture. Since 2010, the protection and development of dead branch peony has been developing rapidly. With the rapid development of economy and society, dead branch peony is one of the resources with deep cultural heritage and strong cultural charm in northern Jiangsu. It is the driving force for the development of tourism. We have always adhered to the working principle of "protection first, inheritance and development". With the attention and support of local governments at all levels, we have invested 1 million yuan successively to provide financial assistance for the protection and development of dead branch peony. Under the leadership of the inheritors, the flower workers in the peony garden have not only made new breakthroughs in strengthening the management and research and development of dead branch peonies, but also achieved success in the off-season flower-inducing technology. Not only have they continuously improved the growth environment of dead branch peonies, but they have also cultivated high-quality soil sources that are more suitable for the growth needs of peonies to plant peonies, so that peonies can grow vigorously and flourish after planting. Not only have they improved the external protection facilities of peonies, but they have also installed monitoring equipment in more than 10 scenic spots such as the dead branch peony main garden, the cultural relics display corridor, the peony humanities and history, and the cultural corridors of the legend of strange flowers. This ensures that dead branch peonies are safe in protection and inherited in development. In order to better promote and inherit the history and culture of the dead branch peony, the Bian clan ancestral hall site and historical relics related to the peony were continuously excavated and collected. Two stone locks used by Bian Yuanheng to practice martial arts when he was young were collected. The Party Committee and government of Biancang Town also arranged inheritors and old teachers and cadres with writing skills to consult the historical materials on the dead branch peony culture and compiled "The Human Landscape of the Dead Branch Peony in Biancang". The first draft of this material was fully compiled; this book records the history of the protection of the dead branch peony by Bian Jizhi, the first owner of the dead branch peony in history, and his sons and grandchildren, and writes the humanistic legend of the Bian family.
