Most Han people celebrate the 8th day of the fourth lunar month as the Ox Festival. On this day, they cook dark glutinous rice with maple leaves, wrap it with vegetable leaves and feed it to the cows, chanting at the same time: "Ox, you are so hardworking, eat well and fill your stomach; Ox, you are capable, plowing the fields is a tough job." After the cows have eaten, the owner takes the cows to the river to bathe, and then puts them on the pre-selected grass to let them eat for a day. On this day, the cows are never used for labor. The Nanxiang Zhuang people regard the 8th day of the fourth lunar month as the "Ox King Festival". On this day, they clean the cattle pen, insert maple branches on the front door of the house and the cattle pen, and offer sacrifices to the Ox King at the door of the cattle pen. Those who raise water buffaloes use maple stamens as juice to steam black glutinous rice, while those who raise yellow cattle use the root of the mountain muntjac to pound and extract juice to steam yellow glutinous rice. In addition to wrapping glutinous rice with vegetable leaves to feed the cows, they also pour a cup of glutinous rice and sprinkle it on the cows. On April 8th, the Han people in Shuikou Township eat "black rice" and are forbidden to light lamps at night. Wei said that lighting lamps at night will attract mosquitoes into the house, and people will suffer from mosquito harassment throughout the year. On this day, maple leaves are used to cook black glutinous rice, which is first wrapped in vegetable leaves and fed to cows, while chanting: "Ox, you are hardworking, eat well and fill your stomach; Ox, you are capable, plowing the fields is a tough guy."
