Gelao Ox King Festival

Guizhou
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Ox King Festival is a unique festival of the Gelao people, which falls on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar. On this day, the local Gelao people kill chickens, prepare wine, and worship the Ox King Bodhisattva, praying that the Ox King will bless the oxen to be strong and healthy. All cattle farmers should let the oxen rest, feed them with the best feed, and make two cakes of high-quality glutinous rice and hang them on the two horns of the ox. Then they should lead the ox to the waterside and let it "look in the mirror" to make it happy, and then take down the cakes and feed them to the ox. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
