The weaving technique of the Maonan flower bamboo hat is mainly distributed in the Maonan ethnic group's Shangnan, Zhongnan and Xianan areas in the southwest of Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The flower bamboo hat, called "dingkahua" in Maonan language (meaning weaving patterns on the bottom of the hat), symbolizes auspiciousness and happiness. It is a token of love between young men and women of the Maonan ethnic group, and is also an indispensable dowry for local women when they get married. It is known as the "tribe treasure" of the Maonan ethnic group. In the past, the Maonan flower bamboo hat was mostly used as rain gear, and later became an integral part of the Maonan ethnic group's clothing. The flower bamboo hat has been circulated in the local area for hundreds of years. During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, the "bamboo hats were extremely fine and dense, and young women wore them" (Qing Dynasty's "Guangxi Tongzhi"). During the Republic of China, the region's "production of the most exquisite bamboo hats" ("Si'en County Chronicles") was also recorded in history. The materials used for the Maonan bamboo hats are very particular. Since bamboo is too cold and damp in early spring, and the skin of the bamboo strips is brittle after frost, they usually select straight and evenly trimmed tendon bamboo and black bamboo after the summer solstice and before the beginning of autumn. When making bamboo strips, first break the bamboo into strips, then break the flat strips and thin strips, and then arch the bamboo strips at both ends to comb the silk, and separate the strips into thin hairs for cross-radiation and fine weaving. The bamboo strips used to weave the bamboo hats are divided into black strips and yellow strips. The black strips are dyed with blue lake ink, and the yellow strips are dyed with the juice of yellow cassia. The basic shape of the bamboo hat is a three-dimensional combination of a plane and a cone. The woven strip pattern is centered on a five-pointed star, and the periphery is woven in a hexagonal ring-shaped cross-radiation. After integration and finalization, it is also painted with fine tung oil paste. The hat has a generous shape, beautiful patterns, and is strong and durable.
