The provincial intangible cultural heritage of the She ethnic group, the flowered bamboo hat, is an integral part of the traditional culture of the She ethnic group. The flowered bamboo hat woven by the villagers of Shangshui Village, Chongru She Ethnic Township, Xiapu County, is the best bamboo weaving craft of the She ethnic group in eastern Fujian with its long history, fine workmanship, sophisticated design and beautiful appearance. During this year's National Day, many people went to Shangshui Village, Chongru She Ethnic Township, Xiapu County to experience the authentic She style and charm, which really made Wu Suncun "hot". In his hands, one bamboo strip after another was transformed into an exquisite flowered bamboo hat of the She ethnic group. Starting from Xiapu County, walking all the way to the mountains, it didn't take long to arrive at Shangshui Village. The altitude here is more than 350 meters, and the valley is deep, which is very suitable for the growth of bamboo. The She people living here have developed many bamboo products with their wisdom and skillful hands. Among them, the flower bamboo hat of the She ethnic group is the best in bamboo weaving craftsmanship of the She ethnic group in eastern Fujian with its long history, fine workmanship, exquisite design and beautiful appearance. The flower bamboo hat weaving technique that has been passed down for hundreds of years has also endowed this place with a strong cultural heritage of the She ethnic group. In the lush bamboo forests all over the mountains, Wu Suncun can always see the growth status of each bamboo at a glance. And this is also the first process of weaving flower bamboo hats, which is to select bamboo. After selecting the bamboo, breaking the strips, weaving, and decorating, from material selection to production, it takes more than 30 processes and about a week for the pure handmade flower bamboo hat to appear in front of you. Wu Suncun has been professionally making flower bamboo hats for 18 years. According to him, the flower bamboo hat of the She ethnic group originated from the legend of the three princesses of the She ethnic group, also known as the "flower hat". In the past, it was mainly used as a tool for She women to shade from the sun and rain when they went out to work, go to the market or visit relatives and friends. Later, it was mostly used as an ornament and one of the dowry items of She girls. The flowered bamboo hat, with its unique weaving technique, has left a strong mark in the splendid folk art of the She ethnic group. In the 1950s and 1960s, Shangshui Village established a flowered bamboo hat production cooperative, and its products were mainly sold to the She ethnic group settlements in Fujian and Zhejiang. After the 1990s, the craftsmanship of making flowered bamboo hats was in danger of being lost due to the passing away of old craftsmen in the village. In 2002, Wu Suncun and his senior brother Lan Shouqi apprenticed to the village master Lan Xingquan to learn the craftsmanship. After two years of hard work, they learned to make a complete flowered bamboo hat independently. The two brothers also became each other's mentors and friends, and often accompanied Wu Suncun at home while making bamboo hats and chatting. With their unremitting efforts, they were selected as representative inheritors of the Ningde municipal intangible cultural heritage of the She ethnic group's bamboo hat making skills, saving this traditional culture that was on the verge of being lost and had complex craftsmanship. "The characteristic of the flowered bamboo hat of the She ethnic group lies in its colorful patterns. In order to make the bamboo hat more decorative, the craftsmen will tie the top with water rattan and decorate it with various beads and ribbons on the basis of the bamboo hat blank to form a unique aesthetic feeling." Wu Suncun said. The exquisiteness of the flowered bamboo hat lies in the "flowers". The whole bamboo hat is woven with nine layers of colorful thin bamboo strips. In addition to its gorgeous appearance, three unique She cultural totems of "tiger teeth", "cloud head" and "swallow mouth" are embedded between the two layers of bamboo hats, which convey the best wishes for She women. Watching Wu Suncun make flowered bamboo hats is a kind of enjoyment: the primary color bamboo strips are the main ones, and the dyed bamboo strips are embellished. His hands flexibly wander among the bamboo strips to repeatedly pick and press. His exquisite skills are not a one-day job. The criss-cross weaving shows the patience and love of the craftsmen. The soft bamboo strips still have the toughness of bamboo, just like the craftsmen's persistence in bamboo weaving skills. The simple and ancient charm revealed by bamboo weaving products has become the most beautiful memory of the hometown for the people of Shangshui Village. They make a living from bamboo and take pleasure in weaving bamboo strips. This intangible cultural heritage skill on their fingertips engraves the art of time and condenses the wisdom of the She people in every detail.
