The parade of gongs, drums and flags is commonly known as "parade of gongs and drums" and "parade of flags". It is a traditional folk art in the folk activities of Jiedong County in spring to pray for a good harvest and major festive activities. It originated in the Qing Dynasty. The traditional parade of gongs, drums and flags is mainly for parades of gods or festive activities, with simple instruments. In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, with the rise of Chaozhou opera and puppet shows, the gongs, drums and flags team gradually enriched the music and flags, adding many elements of the times. At present, the distribution of the parade of gongs, drums and flags is centered on Jiedong County and Paotai Town, and the influence range covers every township in the county. The gongs, drums and flags are mainly composed of two parts: the flag team and the Chaozhou gong and drum team. The formation is mostly the flag team in front, divided into more than ten teams such as ceremonial guards, horse head gongs, horizontal capes, mother umbrellas, large and small five-point flags, large and small year flags, waist drums, ladies' performances, children's fire dragon torches, eight treasures, flower baskets and dramas. Among them, the large and small five-point flag team and the large and small year flag team are the main body of the flag parade. Wufeng Flag is commonly known as "Wu Biao". The flag team is mainly composed of strong men wearing straw shoes, bamboo hats and warrior costumes. Each person carries a triangular "centipede flag" three or four meters high on his shoulder. The number of people in the team ranges from a dozen to more than a hundred. The annual flag is also called "wenbiao". The flag is made of rectangular silk satin, embroidered with words such as "good weather and good harvest" and "peace and prosperity". It is crossed by a bamboo pole and requires 2 to 4 people to carry it. The head and tail of the flag must be "pressed" or "dropped" by rare treasures such as famous cigarettes or handicrafts. The number of flags ranges from 36 to 160. The team is mostly composed of handsome young men and women, with men wearing long gowns and women wearing cheongsam-style skirts. During the parade, the audience can judge which male flag is the most "handsome" and which female flag is the most "elegant". The Chaozhou gong and drum team consists of dozens to one or two hundred people, and is divided into two teams: gongs and drums-music. The gong and drum team is mainly percussion instruments, commonly known as "Wupan", which can use up to 9 big drums, accompanied by Suluo, Zhongluo, cymbals, Yueluo, Qinzi and other percussion instruments; the string orchestra has 4 to 16 suonas, accompanied by Yehu, Erhu, Yangqin, Pipa, Sanxian, Guzheng, Ruan and other instruments. The Chaozhou gong and drum team is conducted by big drums and led by suona. The tunes played include [Opening the Fan Window], [Nanzheng Palace], [Xiao Yangzhou], [Throwing Nets to Fish] and [Red Dragon Playing in the Water]. The gong and drum flag parade integrates folk parade activities, traditional art performances and traditional music in the Chaoshan area, and is combined with local traditional festivals and folk festive activities. The parade has at least 300 or 400 people, and as many as thousands of people. There are many spectators along the way, which has a good social and mass effect. It is of great value to the study of folk traditional culture and social customs in the Chaoshan area. At present, as most of the young and middle-aged artists have gone out to do business and work, the inheritance of the parade teams is in a period of transition and they are facing the dilemma of lack of successors. In addition, the costumes and equipment of most teams are damaged over the years and cannot be renewed. The gong, drum and flag parade activities are gradually decreasing, which needs to attract the attention and concern of the relevant departments.
