Gongs and drums
The big and small gongs and drums of Meizhu are a musical wonder on both sides of the Xu River. Now they are all over the Xu River, southeastern Anhui and southern Jiangsu. Whether it is the annual festivals, weddings and funerals, birthdays of the elderly, newlyweds, temple fairs, and business openings, you can hear their sounds, adding to the celebration of auspicious days. The big gongs and drums originated from the folk wind and percussion music along the Xu River in Dingbu, Meizhu Town, Langxi County, and have a long history. There is no chart for its inheritance, but it is passed on orally. Therefore, some of the names and points of the big and small gongs and drums are different in each village, and the playing methods are also different. Here we only take the big gongs and drums of Zhoujia Village as an example: 1. The big gongs and drums are composed of twelve relatively independent gong and drum music sections that can be connected into a set. From the first to the fifth section, it is called "small five sets". The sixth to the twelfth section is "big seven sets". But no matter how it changes, it still cannot be separated from the twelve gong and drum sections. The performance uses two rhythms, "long set" and "fast set", to connect twelve different drum beats together to form a complete set of gongs and drums. The big drum plays the leading role in the performance of big gongs and drums. The whole performance is coordinated and strict, with relative pitch and simple harmony. The long trumpet music appears with the rhythm of Su Luo, high and loud, greatly setting off the joyful atmosphere. If you need to express a joyful and compact emotion, you can go directly from the first set to each set. It is called "chain set". 2. When the small gongs and drums are actually used, they are alternately played with the tunes of suona and flute, and sometimes they are played together with wind instruments. It is rich in color and rich in rhyme. Langxi County is located in the southeast of Anhui. Meizhu Town is at the northernmost end of the county, connected to Gaochun County and Liyang City in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. Dingbu Street in Meizhu Town and Yaxi Town in Gaochun County are separated by only the Xu River. In the late Spring and Autumn Period (506 BC), since Wu Zixu dug this artificial canal (Xuhe River) during his attack on Chu, people from Wu and Yue gathered on both sides of the river. For more than 2,500 years, under the nurturing of this river, multiple cultures have been blended here for a long time. The provincial "intangible cultural heritage" "Jiao Wuchang" and the municipal "intangible cultural heritage" of large and small gongs and drums, small lanterns, and blessing meetings are still preserved. The national "intangible cultural heritage" of Southern Anhui Flower Drum Opera was first produced here. Dingbu's large and small gongs and drums performances are all over the cities and towns of Gaochun, Liyang, and Changzhou in Jiangsu Province. This not only satisfies and enriches the spiritual and cultural pursuits of people in this region of Anhui and Jiangsu provinces, but also promotes the local ethnic folk culture, influences and drives this activity in the neighboring areas of the two provinces, promotes the folk cultural exchanges in this region, and also arouses the cultural recognition and attention of the descendants of Meizhu villagers on the other side of the strait. In August 2007, large and small gongs and drums were approved as the "first batch of municipal intangible cultural heritage lists in Xuancheng City". On November 3, 2008, the town was awarded the title of "Hometown of Chinese Folk Culture and Art".
