The Golden Lion Dance in Tanxi has a long history and profound meaning. The Golden Lion Dance in Tanxi is commonly known as "fighting tiger and lion" or "performing tiger and lion". It is a traditional folk dance. According to the old artists of Ximei Village in Tanxi Town, the Golden Lion Dance began in the Southern Song Dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Golden Lion Dance in Tanxi Town is represented by Ximei Village. Its ancestors worshipped Mo Qingjiao from Haifeng as their teacher during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, and founded the Golden Lion Hall after returning from learning art. The Golden Lion Dance performance is an indispensable entertainment program in various villages and communities in Tanxi. At the same time, whenever a new house is completed; a bridge is laid and completed; and a temple celebration, the "Golden Lion" is invited to suppress evil and stop the brakes. Especially during the Spring Festival, the activities are more frequent, with more than a dozen performances a day, and as few as seven or eight performances. From the Ming and Qing Dynasties to before the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was particularly popular to build Golden Lion Halls in Tanxi. Some villages had five or six of them. The main reason for the popularity of Golden Lion Dance performances at that time was the chaos of war and the rise of bandits. People built halls to practice, strengthen their bodies, and defend against thieves. Tanxi Golden Lion Dance is a traditional dance performed by a pair of people, supplemented by two accompaniments. It is mainly dance, accompanied by percussion music, combined with traditional folk martial arts performances, to form a complete performance form. Whenever the Golden Lion Dance arrives in a village or community, the "Golden Lion" must "worship" every household, which means to drive away evil spirits. During the performance, two people enter the "lion body quilt", one dances the lion head, the other dances the lion tail, and plays the role of the awakening lion. There are two other accompanying actors, one plays the role of a warrior (Ziwei Xingjun), commonly known as "Nongshi Yi", and the other plays the role of a funny man (Jinguang Buddha), commonly known as "Big Head Ghost". The dance performance process includes: opening greetings, round steps, jumping steps, shaking, looking up, dancing at the wind, bowing down, stretching, stepping to chase the wind, looking up independently, walking around, and returning the greetings at the end. The dance structure is tight and compact, with ups and downs, a combination of movement and stillness, and it is done in one go. The twelve dance postures imitate the wonderful movements of the lion's powerful fighting, with tacit cooperation, unique dance rhythm, free tumbling, and lifelike, forming a complete artistic whole. In terms of modeling, the posture of the awakening lion is reproduced in a wonderful and majestic way. The martial arts performance is realistic and exciting. It belongs to the Nanquan Mopai routine, including four-pointed fist, upper-pointed fist, head-door fist, second-door fist, four-door fist, driver fist, war horse fist, Guanyin sitting lotus and other routines. The horse step is lively, the brick frame is stable, and it is good at foot attack. The accompaniment music of the Golden Lion Dance belongs to Guangdong folk music, accompanied by large gongs and drums, large and small cymbals, small suona and other instruments. Different tunes are played according to different plots. The tunes include: Fude Temple, Dakaimen, Guojianglong, Daxingjun, Ditao, etc. The tone rises and falls with the dance, majestic and magnificent, loud and open, inspiring, making people steadfast and courageous in the face of difficulties, overcoming difficulties and striding forward, reflecting the objective truth of using power to suppress evil. After the founding of New China, the Tanxi Golden Lion Dance Performance Team has participated in folk activities and various competitions many times. In 2009, he was invited by the Fengshan Mazu Council of Shanwei to participate in the "Golden Lion Dance" performance and was awarded; in February 2010, he participated in the "Qilin Lion Elephant" Performance Competition in Haifeng County and won the "Excellence Award" and "Performance Award"; in February 2010, he was invited by the Fushan Mazu Council of Lufeng to participate in the performance and won the "Special Invitation Performance Memorial Award". Tanxi Golden Lion Dance has a long history, a deep folk foundation, and is widely spread. It has certain historical value and artistic research value: it plays an important role in the study of the history of Chinese folk dance; its dance movements, shapes, dance rhythms, instrumental accompaniment, etc. reflect the artists' superb skills and contain certain scientific genes.
