Mid-Autumn Festival Customs in Zezhou
The traditional customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival have been well protected and passed down from generation to generation in Zezhou. The natural scenery of Jue Mountain complements the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival customs, celestial worship, and moon worship, making the Mid-Autumn Festival culture here show a unique and distinctive charm, known as "Jue Mountain Moon, the world's wonder." It has a very rich cultural heritage. Jue Mountain is located 20 kilometers southeast of Jincheng City. Its core area is centered on Jue Mountain in Zezhou County today, radiating to the Central Plains such as Shanxi, northwest Henan, and southern Hebei. "Jue Mountain Spits the Moon" is the first of the eight scenic spots in ancient Zezhou and the four famous scenic spots in Jincheng. This scenic spot is best in the Mid-Autumn Festival in August. The advantages of the natural environment, coupled with the trauma of long-term wars and the ancient worship customs of celestial culture in Zezhou area, make the Mid-Autumn Festival concentratedly displayed and reflected in the Jue Mountain area, which has become a demonstration site for the Mid-Autumn Festival cultural tradition with local characteristics and protection value. Its cultural influence has formed a core area of Jueshan, including Nancun Town, Bagong Town, Gaodu Town, Shanhe Town, Liukou Town, etc. in Zezhou County, extending to Yangcheng County and Qinshui County in the west, Gaoping City and Changzhi City in the north, Jiaozuo City and Jiyuan City in Henan Province in the south, and Lingchuan in the east. According to literature and ancient inscriptions, Jueshan had a grand custom of worshipping the moon, worshipping the moon, and appreciating the moon as early as the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and it was even more so in the Tang and Song Dynasties. It has had considerable influence in the ancient Zezhou area and its surrounding areas such as southeastern Shanxi, northwest Henan, and southern Hebei, and has gradually changed from worshipping the moon to appreciating the moon. According to the inscription on the stone pillar of Qinglian Temple in the first year of Yuanfu in the Song Dynasty (1098), Duan Yue, the magistrate of Zezhou, Geng Min, the magistrate of Jincheng, and Huang Shuao, the county lieutenant, "walked by the moon and the stream, passed wine and wrote poems." Li Junmin, the top scholar in the Jin Dynasty, visited Jue Mountain to enjoy the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival and wrote the poem "The moon rises from the mountain at midnight, and the wind shakes the pine trees in the valleys". Xu Anren, the governor of Zezhou during the Jin Dynasty, visited Jue Mountain to enjoy the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival and wrote the poem "Tonight, I throw my pen to the moon beside the platform, and it comes to illuminate the secluded people who are traveling outside". In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the trend of moon appreciation was prevalent, and literati and poets from all directions came in droves. It became a custom to enjoy the moon and write poems here, and many beautiful poems were left behind. Related works include: "Collection of Poems and Lyrics on Jue Mountain to Chant the Moon", "Jue Mountain", "Jue Mountain Chronicles", "Collection of Poems on Moon Appreciation in Jue Mountain in Successive Dynasties", "Lingrui Jue Mountain", etc. For ordinary people in Zezhou area, coming to Jue Mountain to collectively worship the moon, worship the moon, climb high, enjoy the moon, visit temple fairs, taste moon cakes, and drink tea during the Mid-Autumn Festival is not only a custom passed down by ancestors, but also a joy to celebrate reunion with relatives and friends. The culture of moon-watching in Jueshan during the Mid-Autumn Festival has long been infiltrated into various fields such as local culture, news, food, and catering. For example, there is Yueshan County in the neighboring Henan Province. There is a village called Yuehuquan near Jueshan, and the temples include Dayue Temple and Xiaoyue Temple. Local girls are often named after the moon. The journal of the Zezhou County Federation of Literary and Art Circles is named "Tu Yue"; the logo of the Zezhou County TV station is "Jueshan Tu Yue"; the flour produced by the Jincheng Flour Mill has a registered trademark of "Tu Yue Brand", etc. Since the reform and opening up, the municipal and county governments have invested in the renovation of the Moon-Watching Pavilion and the Moon-Watching Pavilion, and built new dedicated roads and mountain trails. At the same time, the traditional cultural customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival have been further excavated, sorted out, and protected. Since 2000, the annual Jueshan Mid-Autumn Festival has been held for a total of 8 sessions. At the same time, activities such as Mid-Autumn Temple Fairs and Mid-Autumn Moon-Watching Poetry Meetings are held, and their influence has spread to the Sanjin land and the vast Central Plains. At present, the local area is actively preparing to build a "Moon Culture Museum". Information source: Jincheng Information Center Information source: Jincheng Information Center
