Dayang, formerly known as Yang'a, is located in the northwest of Zezhou County, Shanxi Province. This place has a long history, simple folk customs, and a wide variety of traditional cultures. Dough sculpture is a unique flower growing on this fertile soil. There is no documentary record or physical material about when Dayang dough sculpture originated. However, the rich local folk life has provided a rich cultural space for the spread of dough sculpture art, and the people's repeated and extensive use has made it flourish. Dayang dough sculpture is mainly known for its grandeur and magnificence. Among them, works such as "Blue Lion and White Elephant", "Eight Immortals Descending to the Earth", "Phoenix Urging Peony", "Date Mountain", "Longevity Peach", and "Twelve Zodiac Signs" are especially loved by people. Dough sculpture works also include characters from dramas and more than a hundred kinds of flowers and birds, such as peacocks, butterflies, lotus flowers, two dragons playing with pearls, deer carrying plums, and fish arching lotus. After these animals are made, they are steamed and painted in various colors according to their characteristics. Then bamboo sticks are inserted into the steamed pigs, sheep, blue lions, and white elephants to form a mushroom shape. They are placed on a dining table with a diameter of more than 1 meter. Before offering them, two men carry them through the streets for public viewing. There are many spectators. The utensils used for dough sculptures are not much different from those used in people's lives. There are large ceramic basins, dough cylinders, rolling pins, dough cutters, panels, chopsticks, food coloring, steamers, etc. In the 1970s and 1980s, many dough sculpture professionals emerged in the local area. Folk artists used metaphors, allusions and other symbolic techniques to create multi-level and rich dough sculptures. These dough sculptures reflect the simple wishes and sincere feelings of the working people, show the spiritual secrets of folk customs, beautify people's lives, and comfort the hearts of fellow villagers. Every New Year, festival, birthday, baby birth, wedding and funeral, dough sculptures of different shapes must be steamed to pray for happiness and auspiciousness.
