🎧  Listen to Introduction

Shadow play, also known as shadow puppetry, is a kind of folk drama that uses cowhide to carve human figures and develop them on a screen with the help of light. It is said to have originated in the Han Dynasty. The poem says: "The Han concubine held her child and played in front of the window, skillfully cutting tung leaves to illuminate the window screen. Emperor Wen ruled the country and brought peace to the world, and made music to pass on to the people's homes." During the Tang and Five Dynasties, Buddhist monks cut shadow figures out of plain paper, chanted sutras, and saved the souls of the dead. In the Song Dynasty, Meng Yuanlao's "Dongjing Menghualu" records: "At every alley, there is no place for music sheds, so many small shadow play sheds are set up to prevent local tourists and children from getting lost, and to gather people with shadows." This reflects the grand performance of shadow puppets in the Northern Song Dynasty. During the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, shadow puppets were not only widely popular in my country, but also spread abroad. In the Qing Dynasty, shadow play troupes were everywhere, and the performances were popular all over the country. It was at this time that Jiangzhou shadow play was introduced from Hancheng, Shaanxi. Jiangzhou shadow play is played with the sound of the bowl, which belongs to the banqiang music, and is accompanied by the beating of small copper bowls. The main instruments of shadow play are small copper bowls, bangu, jiezi, hand gong, cymbals, small horse gong, horse gong and suona. Stringed instruments include moon guitar, huhu, two-stringed string, flute, etc. The shadow play box can be carried by one load, but it has all kinds of pavilions, gardens, embroidery pavilions, study rooms, temples, halls, etc. During the performance, you can fly in the clouds, go up to the sky and into the ground, and the changes are unpredictable. There are more than 80 traditional repertoires, such as "Flame Mountain", "Wusong Fighting the Tiger", "Scorpion Mountain", "Collecting the Fire Dragon", "Five-Colored Horse", "Tongtian River", etc.
