The ancient town of Xuhang is a famous straw weaving town in the south of the Yangtze River. Yellow grass straw weaving is a traditional handicraft of Xuhang. The ancestors of Jiading used the stems of yellow grass to weave exquisite daily necessities, decorated with colorful patterns. They are fine and beautiful, light and convenient, and have become a local specialty. Its yellow grass weaving has a long history and is well-known both at home and abroad. Xuhang yellow grass has a light color, smooth and tough texture, and can be dyed. The handicrafts woven with it have clear textures, fine and even, moderate tightness, flatness and smoothness, and are diverse in categories, novel in style, rich in colors, exquisite in craftsmanship, and have national characteristics. Straw weaving products include handbags, fruit basins, cup covers, basin mats, slippers, etc., which are full of rural flavor, and have the natural beauty, artistic beauty and practical value of handmade textiles. They are also handicrafts and natural environmentally friendly products. Yellow grass weaving can be called a unique product of Jiading arts and crafts. There are 20 categories and thousands of varieties of yellow grass weaving. The shoes woven with yellow grass are light and practical, exquisite and elegant, and were listed as tribute in the Qing Dynasty. During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, a yellow grass weaving area centered on Xuhang Town was formed, which became a major family handicraft for local farmers. Since the production process of Xuhang straw weaving is a pure handicraft, it cannot form large-scale production, has low economic benefits, and cannot withstand the impact of the market economy. Most of the original weavers have changed their jobs. Xuhang straw weaving is a unique handicraft in China. Although it has a history of nearly a thousand years, the number of inherited works is relatively small because yellow grass is difficult to collect and preserve for a long time. Representative straw weaving works can only be seen in photos, and the effect is greatly reduced. Craftsmen who make a living by straw weaving are rare. At present, there are only some peasant women who weave some straw sandals and handbags in their spare time and sell them sporadically. There is no stable group. Due to the accelerated pace of urbanization in Jiading, large areas of yellow grass are disappearing, and the raw materials for Xuhang straw weaving are even more scarce and need to be protected urgently. Xuhang straw weaving is facing an endangered state of lack of successors and interruption.
