Dingtao shadow puppetry, also known as storytelling through paper, originated in Houfeng Village, Zhangwan Town, in the late Qing Dynasty. It has a history of about 200 years. Compared with the rap art of shadow puppetry in other places in Shandong, Dingtao shadow puppetry is close to local opera, which is unique in Shandong shadow puppetry art. The ancestors of the Feng family moved to Dingtao in the Ming Dynasty. In 1821, Feng Yupu and Feng Yufu were inspired by the art of paper cutting and founded shadow puppetry, which has been passed down for 6 generations. At first, the ancestors of the Feng family were good at paper cutting and painting for their own entertainment. Since paper is not easy to preserve, they tried to carve on animal fur, improve the production process according to the form of puppets, add joints, and greatly enhance its flexibility. Various patterns were engraved on the leather surface, and colors were painted to make the shadow figures clearer, more transparent and more beautiful. The carved figures are about a foot long and have relatively detailed classifications. Thus, shadow puppetry was created. Dingtao shadow puppets are made of cowhide. They are huge, more than one foot high, handsome in shape, well-made, delicately carved, with smooth lines, strong color contrast, bright and dynamic, simple and rough in style, ancient in color, and vigorous in carving. They fully reflect the artistic style of roughness and fineness, boldness and arrangement, and have strong local characteristics. In addition to being operated by a dedicated person, Dingtao shadow puppets also have dedicated singing and accompaniment personnel. During the performance, there are as few as six or seven people, and as many as ten or twenty people. There are thirty or forty plays, and there are continuous plays, which can be performed continuously for more than a month. Frequently performed plays include "The Romance of the Gods", "Journey to the West", "The Generals of the Yang Family", etc. Its language is easy to understand, the story is tortuous and vivid, and it has a strong local cultural characteristics. Dingtao shadow puppet music combines various factors such as opera, folk art, folk songs, and minor tunes. The musical image is rich, very expressive, and has a high appreciation value. Dingtao shadow puppetry has a clear history of its origin, development, rise and fall, and rich materials.
