Huimin clay sculpture generally refers to Henan Zhang clay sculpture, which is locally known as "Wawa Zhang". It is mainly distributed in Henan Zhang Village and its surrounding areas on the south bank of Shahe River in Zaohuli Township, about 15 miles southwest of Huimin County, Shandong Province. Henan Zhang clay sculpture is said to have originated in the early Qing Dynasty, when many immigrants from other places moved here to settle down. Some farmers used local mud to make clay sculptures to make a living. After a long period of development, Henan Zhang clay sculpture has evolved from the initial human, Buddha, animal and other varieties to hundreds of varieties later. Some also install whistles in the clay sculptures to make them sound toys; or install springs and leads in the clay sculptures to make them movable toys. The main material of Henan Zhang clay sculpture is the silt of the Yellow River, which must be completed through more than a dozen processes such as pounding mud, making blanks, drying, pasting paper, applying powder, coloring, opening eyes, and applying glue. The clay sculptures are mostly painted on the front, and the back is generally simple or unpainted. The colors used are mostly fiery red, pink, green, yellow, purple, etc., with ink and gold lines, smooth brushstrokes, and concise lines, focusing on beautifying and rendering the warm and fiery festive atmosphere. Henan Zhang clay sculptures have the characteristics of simple shape, exquisite workmanship, bright colors, prominent images, and rich decorative features. Henan Zhang clay sculptures have a wide range of themes and rich content, including opera stories, various styles of dolls and animals, etc., which are closely integrated with people's social life. Not only are they folk art for appreciation, but they are also toys that increase children's intelligence. Because of their unique aesthetic value and symbolic meaning, they are becoming more and more popular.
