Luzhou Walnut Carving
The Luzhou area has a folk custom of carving walnuts to "ward off evil spirits" since ancient times. In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, walnut carving artists created the unique "carving" technique and walnut hollowing technique, which made Luzhou walnut carving rise from a simple folk custom to a carving art. The "carving" in Luzhou walnut carving is a unique carving technique that can directly express traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, and is unique in the national walnut carving industry. It uses the dark brown endocarp and white endosperm of the "ivory kernel" to reflect the black and white relationship in traditional culture and form a composition. The hollowing technique in Luzhou walnut carving is carved on walnuts with wild surface patterns and complex internal structures. It uses the surface structure and internal structure of walnuts in multiple layers, and can carve up to 4 layers of complex compositions. The carving technique and walnut hollowing technique are the crystallization of the wisdom of Luzhou walnut carving artists. Each work is unique and has strong historical research value. Luzhou walnut carving has always existed mainly in the form of family inheritance. Due to the long production cycle and the difficulty of carving, the art of carving walnuts in Luzhou was on the verge of extinction before liberation. Later, it was passed down and protected by the inheritors Li Ji, his father Li Zhaoyun, and his grandfather Xu Congde, and the hollowing and carving techniques of walnuts were completely preserved.
