The traditional craft of Weifang walnut carving has a history of nearly 200 years. In the late Qing Dynasty, people from Weixian went to Weinan to learn walnut carving from Zhang Dayan, a famous walnut carving artist from Zhucheng, and were famous in the village for their skilled skills. After the inheritance and innovation of masters such as Du Langgui, Kao Gongqing, Du Chuangong, Wang Xude, and Xing Youbi, an artistic style with exquisite and exquisite art was formed. Du Langgui learned from his father Du Weinan and had profound skills. After 1950, Du Langgui's works such as "Water Flooding Jinshan" and "Boating at Chibi" were sold to countries such as the Czech Republic, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In 1955, Premier Zhou Enlai visited abroad and brought seven works such as "Eight Horses" created by Du Langgui and his apprentice Kao Gongqing to foreign friends. In 1957, Du Langgui was awarded the title of "National Old Artist" by the State Council. Kao Gongqing inherited and developed the Weifang walnut carving art and created a large number of works. His works include "Lotus Picking Boat", "The Story of the West Chamber", "Cowherd and Weaver Girl", "Chang'e Flying to the Moon", "Jiaxing Nanhu Memorial Boat", etc. In 1956, Kao Gongqing created four walnut carving gifts such as "Pine Crane Longevity" for Mao Zedong's birthday. In 1963, Kao Gongqing and his apprentice Wang Xude carved four walnut boats "Millions of Heroes Crossing the Yangtze River", which were exhibited at the Shandong Arts and Crafts Exhibition in April 1964 and were highly praised by people from all walks of life. Kao Gongqing was awarded the title of "Old Artist of Shandong Province". "Night Tour of Chibi" made by Kao Gongqing and Wang Xude, the master and apprentice, has developed compared with Wang Shuyuan's "Walnut Boat" in the Ming Dynasty. The number of people on the walnut boat has increased from 5 to 7 in the original work, and wine tables, wine pots and other utensils have also been added. Du Chuangong inherited his family tradition and was brave in innovation. He became a representative figure of Weifang walnut carving and an outstanding inheritor of Chinese folk culture. In 2009, he was awarded the title of "Top Ten Folk Art Masters of Shandong Province". His representative walnut carving works, such as "Nine Dragons Playing with Pearls", "Eighteen Arhats", "Qianlong Goes to the South of the Yangtze River", and "Millions of Heroes Crossing the Yangtze River", have won national awards for many times. Wang Xude is a master of arts and crafts in Shandong Province and a representative inheritor of national intangible cultural heritage projects. In 1993, he was awarded the title of "Chinese Artist" by UNESCO. His representative walnut carving works include "Horse-drawn Sedan", "Night Tour of Chibi" and "Snuff Bottle". Xing Youbi is committed to promoting and inheriting the Weifang walnut carving skills, and his works have won provincial and above awards for many times. In 1996, UNESCO awarded him the title of "Folk Arts and Crafts Artist". Weifang walnut carving artists use walnuts as raw materials, absorb the essence of painting and sculpture art, and skillfully use the natural shape and hemp pattern of peach kernels to carve various vivid scenes. They are exquisite and elegant, exquisite and translucent, famous at home and abroad, and are national treasures. Weifang walnut carving has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.
