Anhui
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Egg carving is a folk craft that is carved on the eggshells of various birds. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, people had the custom of giving red eggs as gifts during festivals and celebrations. Later, people painted patterns of flowers, birds, fish, insects, and facial makeup on eggshells for good luck. Later, they drilled holes in the eggs and hollowed them out, and carved exquisite patterns on the surface of the eggshells, gradually forming the egg carving technique. The ancient city of Luzhou, located in the central part of Anhui Province, has a rich cultural heritage. The relatively closed farming society provides a good environment for the survival and spread of the traditional skill of "Luzhou egg carving" among the people. Hefei is known as the "hometown of 0 chickens". In addition to the famous Feidong and Feixi 0 chickens and Wushan tribute geese, there are also artificially raised pheasants, wild geese, peacocks, ostriches, etc. Various eggshells provide rich raw materials for egg carving. At present, the egg carving technique of Luzhou mainly has two inheritance series, Ma Jiaxuan and Wang Jian. Ma Jiaxuan and Wang Jian, on the basis of inheriting the traditional egg carving technique, have developed innovatively and formed their own egg carving art style, forming their own school and enjoying a good reputation in Luzhou. Luzhou egg carving fully absorbs folk culture in its creative themes and reflects human reality. There are many types of works, including portraits, flowers, birds, fish and insects, Peking Opera masks, poems, calligraphy and paintings, etc. In terms of carving techniques, the knife skills are delicate and the form and spirit are both present, which is often amazing.
