Zhuji Egg Carving

Zhejiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Egg carving, also known as "eggshell carving", is a plastic art that uses carving techniques to create a painting effect on eggshells. Egg carving artists carve various figures and scenery on the thin shells of poultry eggs, using their pens and knives to create delicate and exquisite carvings. They show graceful, fresh and beautiful patterns, and carve out the world in detail. Different "egg carving" works have different carving methods. Some only carve on the surface of the eggshell, while others hollow out the entire egg, each with its own merits. There are also two types of coloring and non-coloring, but generally, coloring is not used, but the original color of the eggshell is used. A set of egg carving works collected by Zhuji Museum was created by egg carving artist Feng Hongwei. Her work "Water Margin Characters" is based on the Water Margin characters painted by the famous figure painter Mr. Dai Dunbang. The carved characters are lifelike and are rare folk crafts. In January 2013, it was included in the fifth batch of Shaoxing City's intangible cultural heritage list.
