Nuo Dance of Yi County

Anhui
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Yi County in southern Anhui was established in the Qin Dynasty. In ancient times, it was a place where the Shanyue people lived. The ancient ancestors gained survival and reproduced by conquering nature. The desire for survival needed the help of natural religious concepts to transcend themselves, and Nuo dance was one of them. The Nuo dance in Yi County was originally a folk activity in the Yi County City God Temple Fair to promote good and punish evil and pray for peace. It was scheduled to be held on the first day of the tenth lunar month every year. The dedication of its participants and the enthusiasm of the scale of the sacrificial scene were no less than the New Year's Day. The most outstanding performance was the performance of the "Local King". The "local king" wears a tall and pointed white hat made of tassels, a white robe, with eyes wide open and a ferocious face, with his mouth sticking out. Behind him is a "liberator", surrounded by little ghosts jumping and parading. The performances are creepy, such as "touring the underworld", "little ghosts catching ghosts", and exaggerated and symbolic performances such as cutting, disembowelment, digging out the heart, climbing a knife mountain, and boiling oil, to express the punishment of evil people and bad people, hooking out their souls and sending them to the underworld, which serves as a warning that "if you do bad things in your life, you will suffer in the afterlife." At the same time, the dancers hold axes and steel forks, wear masks of the five gods of "wind, rain, thunder, lightning, and fire", and dance to the accompaniment of gongs and drums, using ghosts to drive away evil and pray for peace and good weather in the new year. "Original Place - Yixian Nuo Dance" has a broad mass base. After years of evolution, it has become a popular traditional dance. It records a lot of historical and cultural information from the ancient times and the farming period. It has reference significance for the study and inheritance of ancient beliefs, music, and dance evolution in the mountainous areas of southern Anhui.
