Huizhou bamboo weaving began in the Tang and Song dynasties and flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The bamboo weaving objects handed down from the Ming and Qing dynasties are mainly bowls, cups, plates and bottles, as well as boxes, book boxes, gift plates, fruit boxes, etc. At present, Huangshan City Museum also has a collection of many bamboo weaving baskets from the Qing Dynasty, all of which are made of bamboo frames and woven into patterned legs with fine strips. During the Republic of China period, bamboo weaving handicrafts were declining and no one was interested in them, so the artists had to change their careers and return home to farm. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, 69 old artists scattered in the urban and rural areas of Tunxi returned to Tunxi and formed a bamboo production cooperative in October 1951. In 1998, the Tunxi Bamboo Weaving Craft Factory was restructured, and now there are very few people engaged in bamboo weaving. At present, the main inheritor of Huizhou bamboo weaving is Cao Dequan, the former leader of the bamboo weaving innovation group of the Tunxi Bamboo Weaving Craft Factory and an arts and crafts artist in Anhui Province. There are more than 300 kinds of Huizhou bamboo weaving products. It can be mainly divided into: flat bamboo paintings, palace lanterns, flower baskets, vases, various lifelike bird and animal fruit jars and ornaments, etc. In recent years, in order to meet the needs of the development of foreign trade and tourism, Tunxi bamboo weaving has broken through the original long, round, square, flat shapes and simple patterns, and developed into bamboo weaving paintings, bamboo carvings, bamboo figures, bamboo weaving animals and birds, etc. Among them, landscapes, flowers and birds, rare birds and animals have complex shapes and patterns. In 1983, Tunxi animal-shaped bamboo weaving participated in the national industry evaluation and was ranked third and won the Hundred Flowers Award. Huizhou bamboo weaving short pieces are as thin as silk, and the wicker silk is as fine as hair. The most sophisticated ones can reach 120 strands per inch. The weaving patterns of wealth, longevity, ten thousand characters, dragons, winds, and eight immortals have added to the interest of folk customs in southern Anhui, and its reputation has spread throughout Shanghai and Hangzhou. The patterns woven by Huizhou bamboo weaving are divided into hollow, dense weaving and alternating hollow and dense; the colors are plain, colorful and lacquered, all of which are elegant and pleasant, beautiful and practical, and are deeply welcomed by consumers.
