The inheritance of Wunijing handmade cotton textile technology originated from the textile skills brought back by Huang Daopo from Yazhou. At the end of the Song Dynasty and the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, Huang Daopo, a native of Wunijing, Songjiang Prefecture, returned to her hometown during the Yuanzhen period after more than 30 years of wandering in Yazhou to spread cotton planting and textile technology. She improved the skills of scissoring, spinning, weaving, and created the weaving techniques of "matching colors" and "picking flowers" into "breaking branches and phoenixes", and developed many exquisite cotton textiles. Huang Daopo's cotton textile skills changed the tradition of using silk and linen as the main clothing materials for thousands of years, changed the economic structure of Jiangnan, and gave birth to a new cotton textile industry. The living customs and traditional marriage customs in Jiangnan have also changed as a result. It can be said that Wunijing handmade cotton textile skills are one of the core contents of China's textile technology. Historically, the printing and dyeing skills of Wunijing, Songjiang are also very famous. Button cloth, thin cloth, standard cloth, Ding Niangzi cloth, Gaoli cloth, twill cloth, dou cloth, purple flower cloth, scraped cloth, treaded cloth, etc. are equally famous as printed and dyed Yunqing cloth, Maobao blue, gray cloth, color printed cloth, blue printed cloth (medicine spot cloth), etc. At present, the inheritors of hand-made cotton textile and printing and dyeing techniques are already in their seventies and eighties. This ancient technique is in danger of being lost, and it is necessary to effectively protect it.
