Yuhang Qingshui Silk Cotton Making Technique
Yuhang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province is located in the Hangjiahu Plain. The local production of Qingshui silk cotton has a long history. As early as the Zhou Dynasty, every household here had planted mulberry trees and raised silkworms. During the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, Yuhang Qingshui silk cotton was famous far and wide. This kind of silk cotton has the advantages of white color, uniform thickness, and soft texture, so it was listed as a tribute by the court. During the Southern Song Dynasty, Yuhang silk cotton was the best in Zhejiang. After the Qing Dynasty, Qingshui silk cotton became more famous. It was exported to Japan during the reign of Emperor Kangxi. During the Republic of China period, Yuhang "Lao Hengchang" Qingshui silk cotton was even more famous at home and abroad. In 1929, Yuhang Qingshui silk cotton won the special prize at the West Lake Expo. Yuhang Qingshui silk cotton is named after its clean water. Yuhang is located on both sides of the Tiaoxi River. The springs of Tianmu Mountain flow into the Tiaoxi River. It is warm but not cold, with fewer impurities, which is conducive to cotton making. The production of Qingshui silk floss requires a process of removing the outer layer of sericin from silk, including six processes such as selecting cocoons, boiling cocoons, rinsing, peeling cocoons, pulling and supporting the floss, and drying. The cleaner the sericin is removed during the production, the better the quality of the silk floss. The production of Yuhang Qingshui silk floss requires high manual skills, and its production depends entirely on the skills of the floss maker. For a long time, the production skills of Qingshui silk floss have been passed down from generation to generation through oral transmission. In this process, the inheritors have accumulated rich practical experience and continuously integrated it into the floss making skills, making this skill the crystallization of the collective wisdom of the people of Yuhang. The Qingshui silk floss made in Yuhang is white and uniform, smooth to the touch, elastic, strong in tensile strength, without floss blocks, floss tendons and impurities, and has excellent quality, which has always been valued by the world. Since the 1970s, a large number of mulberry trees in Yuhang have been cut down, and the economic benefits of sericulture production are not high, sericulture has been greatly reduced, and silkworm farmers have changed their jobs, resulting in a lack of raw materials for silk floss production, which has become a sourceless water. At the same time, due to the development of science and technology, new technologies have had a huge impact on traditional crafts, and the craft of making Qingshui silk cotton is temporarily unsustainable. Protecting and inheriting this ancient craft has become an urgent task, which requires the joint efforts of government departments and civil society. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
