China's traditional textile technology has a long history. Since cotton was introduced from India in the 7th century, China's textile industry has shifted from hemp spinning to cotton spinning. In the Yuan Dynasty, under the influence of Huang Daopo's textile technology reform, clothes and quilts made of homespun cloth became a necessity in people's lives. Yongji City, Yuncheng City, has a flat terrain, fertile soil, and a good natural environment, which is an ideal place for cotton planting. For a long time, cotton fabric processing has been a local traditional craft. In Kaizhang Town, Yongji City, it is the "No. 1 Cotton Planting Town in Shanxi" and one of the 22 famous high-quality cotton production bases in the country. The Huichang homespun cloth making technology is here. Local farmers grow cotton seeds in spring, manage cotton fields in summer, sell cotton in autumn, and weave cotton cloth in winter. All year round, they plant in spring and harvest in autumn, and the looms can be heard. The Huichang homespun cloth making technology process is complicated and exquisite. From picking cotton and spinning to weaving on the machine, it has to go through 72 large and small processes such as ginning, fluffing, spinning, beating, sizing, dropping, warp, and brushing. There are 16 main processes: cotton ginning, cotton fluffing, cotton batting, spinning, beating, dyeing, dropping, pattern adjustment, warp adjustment, weft adjustment, shuttle, heddle pulling, tying, weaving, finishing, cloth repairing, etc., and only when one product is finished is it considered finished. The carefully woven cloth products are colorful, exquisitely patterned, comfortable and cool to the touch, and have become a new type of home textile products that meet the needs of modern people. In 2017, Huichang cloth making skills were rated as the fifth batch of representative projects of intangible cultural heritage in Shanxi Province. Recently, it was officially selected as the fifth batch of national representative projects of intangible cultural heritage.
