🎧  Listen to Introduction

Paper-cutting is an art of carving and hollowing out flat paper. It has a long history in my country. In the Han and Tang Dynasties, people used gold foil and colored silk to cut into squares and stick them on their temples as decorations. According to research, in ancient times, the ethnic minorities living in Pingwu, namely the "Baima Fan", "Baicao Fan", and "Mugua Fan" (now the Baima-, Pingwu Qiang and Pingwu Huya Tibetan), cut animal skins and linen into decorations similar to paper-cutting before they began to make paper. Pingwu paper-cutting is mostly used in festivals, weddings, sacrifices and other activities. Xie Chengfei has lived in Tibetan and Qiang settlements for a long time and has been deeply influenced by the Qiang culture and Baima Tibetan culture. Through nearly 30 years of study and research, he has formed a relatively unique artistic style, which has kept Pingwu paper-cutting with distinct national traditional cultural characteristics. Xie Chengfei has become the inheritor of Pingwu paper-cutting art. "Pingwu paper-cutting" has a simple, pure and smart composition, smooth lines, and skilled techniques, with a deep connotation of national and folk traditional culture. Xie Chengfei, the inheritor of Pingwu paper-cutting, has formed the characteristics of Baima Tibetan and Qiang ethnic styles in the national paper-cutting field. More than 600 works have been published in more than 150 newspapers and periodicals, including Qiushi (3 pieces), People's Daily (21 pieces), China Daily (12 pieces), Workers' Daily, Farmers' Daily, People's Pictorial (2 pieces), PLA Pictorial (6 pieces), China Culture News, Sichuan Daily, etc. He won the second prize of "China's First Paper-cutting Exhibition to Commemorate the Long March of the Red Army"; the second prize of "National Paper-cutting Exhibition to Welcome the Return of 18 Provinces and Cities"; the third prize of "China's First Paper-cutting Exhibition"; the third prize of "China's Paper-cutting Century Retrospective Exhibition"; the bronze medal of "First World Chinese Art Exhibition" and was awarded the title of "World Chinese Artist". Paper-cutting performances were given at provincial, municipal and county Spring Festival Galas for many times. The "Baima Customs" series of works were presented as gifts to the Minister of Culture of Central African countries, the Governor of Washington State of the United States and Russian guests. On the eve of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the "5.12" earthquake, which was rare in history, occurred in Wenchuan, Sichuan. While doing a good job in earthquake relief work, in order to express that a cultural worker in the worst-hit area is concerned about the Olympics, he used the night to brave the aftershocks and completed the huge paper-cutting "Nine Lions Welcome the Olympics" (4 meters long and 1 meter wide) and "Zangqiang Children Welcome the Olympics" in late July. Sichuan TV, Mianyang TV, Mianyang Daily, Mianyang Evening News and other media have made special reports. In 2009, "Thanks to Hebei. Boundless Love" (2.4 The large-scale paper-cut (1.000 m.0.9 m) participated in the Spring Festival Gala of Hebei TV Station and was displayed on site to express the gratitude of the people of Pingwu. The editorial committee of the Contemporary Painting and Calligraphy Masters Series and the Hong Kong People's Fine Arts Publishing House awarded him the title of "Contemporary Art Achiever". "Sichuan Daily", "Sichuan Workers' Daily", "Nationalities", "Mianyang Daily", "Mianyang Evening News", Sichuan TV, Mianyang TV and other media have made special reports on this many times. In particular, his works such as "The Twelve Zodiac Signs", "Baima Customs" and "Ancient Ladies" use the traditional ancient Baima paper-cutting language and incorporate the folk embroidery patterns of the Qiang people, which are highly artistic and ornamental. It has a high scientific research value for studying the characteristics and evolution of Pingwu Qiang culture and Baima Tibetan culture.
