Sichuan Paper Cutting

Sichuan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Folk paper-cutting originated very early. After thousands of years of development, it has become one of the most popular folk arts among the Chinese people. Paper-cutting originated from the exorcism paper-cutting of the primitive witchcraft of the Yi people. Later, it was integrated with the folk wedding and funeral paper-cutting patterns in the Han area, and the shoe patterns, clothing, window decorations and other paper-cutting patterns in daily life, becoming a unique folk paper-cutting school. "Paper-cutting" is deeply loved by the urban and rural people in Sichuan. It is a folk art with strong local characteristics that combines folk customs and folk paintings. It is widely popular in Sichuan and various cities and towns, and has a history of thousands of years. It has various forms, including festive series, blessing series, decoration series, zodiac series, folk customs series, celebrity series, mountain and river scenery series, national style series, etc., which bring artistic enjoyment to the masses and bring a joyful atmosphere to the festival. Its characteristics that are different from other arts are that it is appreciated by both the refined and the popular, and the masses are easy to participate in and interact. Folk paper-cutting has high aesthetic value and application value. From the perspective of aesthetic value, it embodies the beauty of subject matter, meaning, composition, color and craftsmanship; from the perspective of application value, folk paper-cutting fully reflects the desire and pursuit of the working people for beautiful things, fully reflects the rich and colorful folk customs, and has an irreplaceable role and artistic value in celebration, blessing and practical decoration. "Paper-cutting" is a folk art widely popular among the people of Sichuan, but after the Cultural Revolution, there were fewer and fewer professional folk paper-cutting artists, and mass paper-cutting activities gradually disappeared, so that paper-cutting gradually faded away in many areas of Sichuan. At present, a few folk artists represented by Teacher Long Ling in Qingyang District are still committed to the inheritance and development of paper-cutting art, but because the folk artists of the art of paper-cutting are currently researching and developing this art at their own expense, and their own economic conditions are not very good, the continuation and inheritance of this art seems quite difficult.
