The most classic and distinctive ones are mainly four forms: masking, board curtains, spring leaves, and window paper-cutting, and five categories: folk customs, modern and contemporary life themes, literary and opera characters, birds and beasts, and flowers and plants. Dingxi paper-cutting has important folklore value and provides sufficient basis for studying the local conditions and customs of Dingxi and the northwest region. It mainly uses paper-cutting to create a prosperous scene, indicating good weather and good harvest in the coming year, and expressing and reflecting the traditional festive folk customs, expressing the good wishes of the working people for their future life. Dingxi paper-cutting is especially common during festivals and auspicious days. In some mountainous areas of Dingxi, the traditional custom of cutting and pasting window paper-cutting on important days such as the Spring Festival and marrying daughters is still maintained. The creators, admirers and preservers of Dingxi paper-cutting are mainly the broad masses of farmers, especially rural women. Although they have not received special art training, they can express their ideals and wishes freely.
