Stepping on the bridge is a ceremony held when a new bridge is built. That is, after the bridge is built, a "stepping on the bridge" ceremony must be held before it can be put into use. Before that, no one is allowed to pass. An auspicious day must be chosen, and the elderly, local celebrities, etc. are invited to step on the bridge. If a sedan chair of a bride, a new official, or a newly-elected scholar passes over the bridge on this day, they must be invited to step on the bridge to represent "new" and "happy". Superstitious people believe that doing so will bring good luck, the bridge will not collapse, and people passing through the bridge can be free from bad luck. However, Longhua's "women stepping on the bridge" is a unique and novel folk custom that does not exist in other places. It originated in the Song and Yuan Dynasties, was popular in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and before 1950, stopped after Longhua was liberated (after experiencing land reform, the Cultural Revolution, etc.), and gradually resumed after the reform and opening up. The process is as follows: on the 14th day of the first lunar month every year, middle-aged and elderly women in Longhua spontaneously gather from all directions, burn incense and worship at Baxian Mountain (a mountain in Longhua), and stay at Baxian Mountain. Early the next morning, each person ties a red cloth on their right hand and holds a stick of incense in their hand. Under the leadership of the incense master, one person knocks on the wooden fish roe in his hand, lights the incense candle, and burns incense under the big Buddha. Then he goes down the mountain and starts to step on the Liangqiao (bridge name), stepping on each bridge 12 times (13 times in a leap year), and then stepping on the Laoliang Bridge, the Chuanchuantuo Bridge and other bridges in turn, the procedure is the same as the first bridge. The whole process is that the incense master lights the incense candle in front, and the bridge steppers line up in two rows and follow the incense master. They are divided into many groups. Each group is led by a person with a loud and charismatic voice to sing the "Bridge Stepping Sutra", and the rest of the people sing along. The bridge stepping team is led by one person and the others are so powerful that the sound spreads throughout the streets and alleys. After stepping on the bridge, they return to Baxian Mountain to pay the incense. Generally, the bridge is stepped on once every three years. If the smoke of the incense goes straight up to the sky when paying incense, then the bridge stepping that year is considered to be completed. If it becomes a "" shape, it must be stepped on again the next year, and it will be stepped on for three years. From beginning to end, the content of the whole song is to persuade people to be kind and generous. Its significance is to pray for blessings, eliminate disasters and ensure peace. That is: eliminate the three disasters and eight difficulties, bless family members and relatives to be safe, and live a harmonious and happy life. At the same time, it also reflects the low status of women at that time, a silent resistance to the hope for gender equality. This activity has been carried on to this day and has become a traditional folk custom in Longhua. In 2009, the dance "Women Stepping on the Bridge" based on "Women Stepping on the Bridge" participated in the 6th Yibin "Wine Capital Style" Local Ethnic Folk Art Competition and won the Creation Award and the Second Prize for Performance.
