Yushengtang was founded in the 36th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1608) and was originally a Bai's medicine shop in Yuci, Shanxi. In the 8th year of Yongzheng, the seventh-generation heir, Bai Lingyun, was recommended to the palace by the then governor for his superb medical skills and served as an imperial physician for 25 years. Bai, the imperial physician, diagnosed the condition by taking the pulse, predicted the disease by looking at the patient, and promoted his medical skills by eating food, which won the appreciation of the emperor and the empress. In the 20th year of Qianlong, when Bai Lingyun retired and returned to his hometown, Emperor Qianlong, in gratitude for his medical skills and medical ethics, bestowed the plaque of "Yushengtang". The Bai family's old shop was officially renamed "Yushengtang". During its heyday, it had more than 100 branches and was famous in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanxi, and Hebei for its homemade pills, powders, pastes, and pills. The century-old Yushengtang has now developed into a modern group enterprise.
