Yuhang rolling lantern originated from the Wengmei area of Yuhang, Zhejiang. It has a history of more than 800 years. It is a folk dance with strong competitive characteristics performed during festivals and lantern festivals. Fan Chengda, a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, once described the rolling lantern in his poem "32 Rhymes of Haiku in the Records of Wuzhong Festivals in the Shangyuan Period" as follows: "Throwing a candle is stable in the air, and pushing a ball is light on the ground", which shows that the rolling lantern was already popular in the Southern Song Dynasty. Yuhang is located in the suburbs of Hangzhou. It was the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty. Various temple fairs were frequent. Rolling lanterns were a must-have feature in the ceremonial team of the old folk festivals, so they were naturally very popular. Yuhang Wengmei is also on the north bank of the Qiantang River. In ancient times, the salt industry was prosperous and pirates continued to invade. For hundreds of years since then, the people of Yuhang have always regarded rolling lanterns as a lucky thing and a tool for strengthening the body. They must participate in the performance every Lantern Festival or temple fair (mainly the Marshal Temple Fair), and thus it has been passed down from generation to generation. Yuhang rolling lantern combines dance, skills and sports, and has the distinctive characteristics of diversity, comprehensiveness and competitiveness. It has nine sets of 27 performance movements, unique artistic conception and typical regional characteristics, showing the outstanding creativity of Chinese folk dance, and has a high research value for exploring ancient folk dance. With the development of modernization and the influence of diversified literature and art, most traditional temple fairs have disappeared, and the opportunities for rolling lantern activities have decreased, and they are on the verge of being lost. Moreover, there are only a few people left who can inherit the rolling lantern making process. Therefore, it is still very urgent to rescue and protect the Yuhang rolling lantern.
