Pearl ball is a traditional Manchu sport. Its original name is pearl picking, which comes from the ancient pearl picking production activities of the Manchus. As early as the time of Nurhachi, the first emperor of the Qing Dynasty, young Manchu men and women living in Baishan and Heishui used "embroidered balls" to compare to large pearls on land when celebrating the harvest. The pearl pickers tried to get rid of the defense of the clam area in the water area and threw the embroidered balls into the hands of their partners. In 1644, the Qing army entered the pass and established Beijing as the capital. The Manchus brought this activity to the capital for the children of the Eight Banners nobles to play. It was introduced from Beijing to Wuchang City in the ninth year of Qianlong's reign, and it has a history of 262 years. The outer shell of the pearl ball is made of leather or rubber, with a ball bladder inside, and the surface should be pearl (white). The circumference of the ball is 54-56 cm and the weight is 300-325 grams. The racket is in the shape of a clam and is made of tough resin material. The mouth of the scoop net is round, with an inner diameter of 25 cm. The rules of the Manchu pearl ball game are as follows: 1. The round length of the pearl ball is 54 to 56 cm and weighs 300 to 325 grams. 2. The pearl ball court is 28 meters long and 15 meters wide, divided into the water area (infield area), the Habang area (-area) and the Weihu area (scoring area). In the water area (infield area), each side has 4 players responsible for attack and defense. The attacker can pass the ball in any direction and throw the ball into the scoop net to score. In the Habang area (-area), each side has 2 athletes, holding Habang (rackets), using technical actions such as blocking, blocking, clamping, and pressing to prevent the opponent's offensive players from throwing the ball into the scoop net. In the Weihu area (scoring area), each side has 1 athlete holding a scoop net. Their task is to use the scoop net to scoop (grab) the pearl ball thrown by their own players. 3. Each pearl ball game is played by two teams, with 7 players on the court for each team. 4. The game is divided into two halves, each half lasting 20 minutes, with a 10-minute break in between. The competition adopts a single round-robin system, and the team with the most points wins. The rules of the pearl ball competition also achieved three major breakthroughs in 2003: a 2-point ball was set up to meet the requirements of improved skills and tactics; to increase the confrontation and tactical coordination space, each team added a player to set up isolation areas in the water area and between the scoring area and the defensive area, reducing the chaos and disputes on the court. To this day, the rules of the pearl ball competition are still being added and matured, and the participating teams need to learn continuously on the spot. Pearl ball, a Manchu sports activity, originates from life, is vivid and colorful. On the court, the silver ball shuttles back and forth, the four clams open and close quickly, and a pair of scoop nets frequently make cuts. It is intense, exciting, and wonderful, which makes people dazzled. Pearl ball is the pearl of national sports, which closely integrates the pride of sports and the beauty of life and labor.
