Pearl Balls
Pearl ball is a traditional sport of the Manchu people. It originated from pearl production and is also called "kicking the core", "collecting the core" and "throwing the core". In Manchu, "core" is the abbreviation of "nichuhe", which means "pearl". Pearl collecting is an important production activity of the Manchu people. The Manchu people regard pearls as a symbol of light and happiness. As early as before the Qing Dynasty, the Manchu people living in the white mountains and black waters made a living by fishing, hunting and collecting pearls. In addition to collecting pearls, young men and women would compete to throw embroidered balls into the fish baskets when celebrating the harvest. The more they threw, the greater the harvest. In order to show the hardship of fighting against wind and waves when collecting pearls, they deified clams and opened their shells to protect their pearls to prevent them from being taken away. Thus, a ball game with both offensive and defensive capabilities was created. Pearl ball is played on a rectangular field 25 meters long and 15 meters wide. The field is divided into four areas by restriction lines, - lines, isolation lines, and scoring lines. There are two teams, each with 7 people. One of the players stands at one end ready to catch the pearls with a net, and two players holding clam-shaped wooden rackets stand in front of the other team's pearl catcher to intercept the pearls. The other four players go into the "water" to compete with the other team for the pearls. After they get the pearls, they throw them to the net holder of their own team, and the other team's clam holder has to try to intercept the thrown pearls with the clam-shaped wooden racket. Only when the pearls escape the interception of the other team's clam-shaped wooden racket and are thrown into the net of the net holder of their own team can they score. The one with the most points wins. Pearl ball, a minority sport, can enrich the cultural life of ethnic minorities, enhance the physical fitness of people of all ethnic groups, enhance the friendship and understanding between people of all ethnic groups, and promote the development of traditional ethnic sports.
