🎧  Listen to Introduction

Walnut carving, also known as fruit kernel carving, has a long history in my country. Judging from the wonderful description of Wei Xueyi's "Walnut Boat Record", the art of walnut carving had reached the highest level of combining breadth and refinement in the Ming Dynasty. It is said that peach wood can drive away evil spirits and eliminate disasters. As early as thousands of years ago, our ancestors used peach wood to carve various totem products for people to wear. It symbolizes auspiciousness, happiness and peace. Peach kernel is also peach wood. The longer it is worn close to the body, the smoother and more beautiful it becomes. In particular, the ancient palace walnut carving crafts have been collected by walnut carving enthusiasts for hundreds of years. my country's walnut carving skills are divided into two major schools: the northern school and the southern school. The two schools are divided into many branches. Yanliang walnut carving belongs to the northern school of Xi'an. This branch originated in Shandong during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. There is no accurate time when it spread to Xi'an. It mainly focuses on peach kernel carving. The 70-year-old walnut carving artist Zhao Bingke was born in an artist family. At the age of 16, he learned from Mr. Sun Guangming, the founder of the northern school of walnut carving, and passed down this unique skill. He is known as "Peach Kernel Zhao". Peach kernels are hard and not easy to break. The carving knives are specially made by the creators based on their years of experience. There are more than ten kinds of knife techniques, such as carving, carving, picking, scraping, and cutting. The process of Yanliang kernel carving is very complicated, with dozens of processes. First of all, you need to prepare the materials, and you need to choose peach kernels with clear patterns and good texture. After selecting, you need to clean and disinfect the surface of the peach kernels. In order to prevent the deformation of the carved works, you need to put them in a pot and steam them. Then, clean the surface of the peach kernels carefully again, remove the remaining pulp impurities, and place them in a dark place to dry. Then, according to the patterns and sizes of the peach kernels, you can carve directly if you are skilled. If you are not skilled, you can use a pencil to outline the pattern before cutting. When carving, the carver needs to have eyes, hands, and heart in unity, and there must not be any mistakes, otherwise all the previous work will be wasted. In the process of carving, in order to make the patterns of the peach kernels clear and easy to observe, you need to brush them with walnut oil continuously. In order to prevent the work from getting worms, the peach kernels must be cleaned out with a fine needle after the work is roughly formed. Then the finished work must be carefully polished with sandpaper. As the saying goes, "three parts carving, seven parts labor", this link is particularly important for the appearance of the work. After polishing, it is soaked and wiped with walnut oil, and a work is considered 0.0 completed. The representative works of Yanliang walnut carving include "One Hundred and Eight Arhats Beads", "Eight Scenes of Chang'an", "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea", "Dragon Boat", "Fisherman's Joy", etc. Each character is only the size of a grain of rice, with clear facial features and vivid shapes. The carved boat has a door in the cabin and an anchor behind the boat. The anchor chain is interlocked, which makes people applaud. Yanliang walnut carving is the best in three-dimensional micro-carving. It shows the long, broad and profound traditional craftsmanship of our country, and is a treasure in the treasure house of our national art. In May 2007, Yanliang walnut carving skills were included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of Shaanxi Province, and in June 2008, it was identified as an intangible cultural heritage of Xi'an.
