Shanxi
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The peach wood carving technique in Yongle Town, Ruicheng County originated from Taoism, and was later passed on to the people. It has been developed and passed down to this day through family workshops. Ruicheng County is located at the junction of the three provinces of Qin, Shanxi and Henan at the Nine-bend Yellow River. The "Lü Gong Temple" in Yongle Town (the former site of Yongle Palace) is 20 kilometers southwest of the county seat. Locals firmly believe that the peach wood mascots produced in the hometown of Taoist immortal Lü Dongbin are the most spiritual, so the Li family (legend has it that Lü Dongbin's secular surname is Li) who have lived here for generations have inherited and developed the peach wood hand-carving technique to this day. The traditional hand-carving technique of Yongle peach wood mascots uses high-quality peach wood from the hometown of Lu Zu in the selection of wood materials. The process is roughly divided into more than 20 steps, including felling, cutting, soaking, secret material drying, classification and selection, design and making, opening and blessing, etc. The main production tools are carving knives, wooden hammers, wooden files, sandpaper, etc. Peach wood products are divided into twelve series, namely, seals, tokens, peach charms, swords, statues, god cards, walking sticks, wooden combs, zodiac signs, four treasures of the study, celebrity calligraphy and paintings, and longevity cards. The handmade peach wood mascots are beautiful, exquisite and unique, and are deeply loved by the people. Chinese folk peach wood has always been regarded as an important instrument for warding off evil spirits and guarding the house. Yongle peach wood carving is a family secret craft. It puts the folk beliefs of Taoism and the folk customs of the people praying for blessings and auspiciousness in the mascots made of peach wood, which has important value in arts and crafts and folklore research.
