Liaoning
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Dalian peach kernel carving originated from folk auspicious art, which embodies the people's longing and pursuit for a better life. The difficulty of kernel carving is that the texture and grooves of each peach kernel are different, and its texture, density, hardness and elasticity are also different, so in the creation of kernel carving, you can only go with the flow. Initially, the big framework should be conceived according to the texture on the surface of the peach kernel. In the creation, the process should also be adjusted according to the dark holes that may appear inside the peach kernel at any time. The whole production process is a process of thinking and creating at the same time, and there is no fixed rules to follow. There is no fixed method, painting method and technique for kernel carving, which needs to change with the change of the shape of the peach kernel. Han Zhiyao, the representative inheritor of Dalian walnut carving, has been learning the art from his family since he was a child. Based on the textual records of "Walnut Boat Records" in the Ming Dynasty, he created the "Walnut Boat". On the basis of this work, he re-created it with increased craftsmanship. The eight windows were hollowed out, poems were engraved on the back of the boat, and the cabin was engraved with flute players, book boys, guests, etc. There are as many as 9 people, 4 more than the original "Walnut Boat", and more perfect than the "Walnut Boat" recorded in the literature. This work has won the "Mountain Flower Award", the highest award for Chinese folk art. In order to better inherit and develop the walnut carving skills, the Municipal Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center has introduced Dalian walnut carving into schools and established a training center. People and skills are old, freehand carving is a natural process, pondering the texture of peach kernels, looking for composition concepts, and discovering the linear evolution of peach kernel carving. With a few simple cuts, the peach kernel is like a kiln change. This is the charm of walnut carving.
