Yi ethnic group colored cloth applique
Colored cloth applique is also called "applique embroidery", "applique embroidery", "applique", "lock edge rolling", etc. It is made of various colored silk, damask, cloth, etc., inlaid and embroidered according to the pattern. Shuicheng Yi colored cloth applique has dozens of traditional patterns such as cirrus head, crooked peach, pomegranate, and various free patterns cut out at will. Most of them are combinations of curved blocks. Various patterns can be interspersed and overlapped, and they are mostly connected with various spiral grass lines that are the same as lock edges. The craft of colored cloth applique of Yi clothing is widely spread in Yi villages in Zhichang, Yushe, Pingzhai and other towns in Shuicheng County. It is the most distinctive traditional handicraft in the production of local Yi clothing. The colored cloth applique craft of Zhichang Yi clothing is an important part of the production and decoration of Yi clothing. It has specific craftsmanship and procedures. It is mutually studied among Yi women and passed down from generation to generation. It fully reflects the intelligence and dexterity of Yi women and has a long history of inheritance. The Yi village where this art is spread is located in the Banliangshan area in the northern section of the Wumeng Mountains in western Guizhou. It is the watershed between the Sancha River of the Yangtze River system and the Beipanjiang River of the Pearl River system. The climate in the area is not hot in summer and not cold in winter. It is located in the central area of Liupanshui, the cool capital, and belongs to the warm temperate monsoon climate zone. The regional vegetation is diverse, streams and waterfalls are everywhere, lava landforms are developed, and peaks and caves are peculiar. It has broad prospects for the development of ecological tourism resources. The applique base material is mostly made of white and other light-colored flat cotton and linen cloth, and the colored fabrics used in the pattern are mostly made of silk with good gloss. The color matching is harmonious and bright, or contrasting colors are directly juxtaposed, or the same type of colors are advanced layer by layer, and the matching depends on each person's preference. The patterns are mainly blocks, and the color blocks are separated or connected by black cloth rolling thread lock edge. The black fabric for rolling and locking the edge needs to be cut out with a whole piece of cloth according to the paper-cut pattern required by the pattern, leaving a margin. The colored fabric required for the pattern should be designed according to the block surface of each part of the paper-cut pattern. When making it, the pattern of the rolling black fabric is fixed on the white base cloth, and then the various colored fabrics cut according to the block surface design are collaged and stacked under the rolling black fabric pattern. Then, the cut edge of the rolling black fabric and the cut edge of the filling color fabric are folded and tightly locked with hidden needle buried thread. The rolling edge can wrap the cut edge of the filling color fabric into a "rolling edge" or overlap it to "leave a margin". The finished colored cloth applique has clear layers, smooth lines, calm, magnificent and harmonious colors. It looks like a single-line flat painting from a distance and a shallow relief from a close distance, which is very ethnic.
