Chaîne des Puys - Limagne fault tectonic arena

🎧  Listen to Introduction

Located in central France, the site includes the long Limagne Fault, the Chaîne des Puys volcanic complex and the inverted relief of the Montagne de la Serre. It is an iconic part of the Western European Rift, which was formed 35 million years ago after the formation of the Alps. The geological features of the site show how the continental crust can crack and then collapse, causing deep magma to rise and cause surface uplift. The site is an exceptional example of continental breakup (or rifting), one of the five main stages of plate tectonics.
