Chaîne des Puys - Limagne fault tectonic arena
Located in central France, the site includes the long Limagne Fault, the Chaîne des Puys volcanic complex and the inverted relief of the Montagne de la Serre. It is an iconic part of the Western European Rift, which was formed 35 million years ago after the formation of the Alps. The geological features of the site show how the continental crust can crack and then collapse, causing deep magma to rise and cause surface uplift. The site is an exceptional example of continental breakup (or rifting), one of the five main stages of plate tectonics.
Gros Morne National Park
Located on the west coast of Newfoundland, the park is a rare example of the continental drift process, with deep ocean crust and mantle rocks exposed. Recent glacial activity has created some spectacular scenery, including coastal lowlands, alpine plateaus, fjords, glacial valleys, cliffs, waterfalls and many pristine lakes.
