Paper-cutting art originated in the Han and Tang dynasties. It is a kind of traditional Chinese folk decorative art with a long history. Since then, it has gradually developed, and there are different styles of paper-cutting works in folk all over the country. Wang Yan's paper-cutting is inherited from her family. Her mother Liang Guifen has already mastered the paper-cutting skills. Wang Yan has been taught by her mother and grandmother and has loved paper-cutting art since she was a child. On the basis of the skills taught by her mother and grandmother, she has made great breakthroughs. When she was twelve years old, her work "Come on" won the "Excellent Work Award" at the first International Children's "Spring Bamboo Cup" Calligraphy and Painting Competition. After that, her paper-cutting works participated in national, provincial and municipal art exhibitions and paper-cutting exhibitions for many times and won awards. In 1993, she was awarded the title of "Folk Paper-cutting Artist" by the Jilin Provincial Department of Culture. In 1995, she participated in the "First China Skillful Women Handicraft Grand Prix" and won the Excellence Award and the title of "China Skillful Women". In August 2009, she won the Excellence Award at the Fifth (China Jintan) International Paper-cutting Art Exhibition. Wang Yan's paper-cutting works are mainly flowers, birds and figures. His representative works include "One Hundred and Eight Generals", "Fairy of Flowers", "One Hundred Cats", "Grand View Garden", "Twelve Beauties of Jinling", "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea", "Twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs", "Rare Birds Facing the Sea", etc.
