Gaojia Opera is one of the local operas in southern Fujian. It is also known as Yijia Opera, Jiujiao Opera, Daban Opera, and Tuban Opera. It is popular in the southern Fujian dialect area of Fujian Province and Taiwan, as well as overseas Chinese and Chinese settlements in Southeast Asian countries. Gaojia Opera was born in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. In the early days, it was just an impromptu costume performance accompanied by folk music. Later, it developed into a professional troupe, mainly performing the story of Song Jiang, and was called Song Jiang Opera. In the middle of the Qing Dynasty, Song Jiang Opera absorbed the performance forms of other art categories and developed into Hexing Opera with both literary and martial arts. In the late Qing Dynasty, it absorbed the artistic elements of Hui Opera, Kun Opera, Yiyang Opera and Peking Opera, forming Gaojia Opera, a local opera in southern Fujian with a unique style. The repertoire of Gaojia Opera is divided into three categories: Daqi Opera, Xiufang Opera and Ugly Dan Opera, with martial arts opera, Ugly Dan opera and Gongan opera being the majority. It has more than 600 traditional plays, including "The Trouble in Hua Mansion", "Trapped in Hedong", "Beheading the Yellow Robe", "Lin Wensheng's Complaint to the Emperor", "Guan Fu's Song", "Xingyuan's Thoughts on the Hairpin", "Meng Jiangnu", "Fan Po Nong", "Tang Erbie" and the linked plays "Three Kingdoms" and "The Legend of Yue Fei". The music of Gaojia Opera belongs to the Nanyin system, mostly from Nanyin and puppet shows, but with some changes in rhythm and melody. The actors sing in their own voice, with vigorous and high-pitched voices, and also with clear and delicate rhymes. The instruments used in Gaojia Opera are divided into two types: civil music and martial music. The civil music is mainly suona, supplemented by pinxiao, dongxiao, erxian, sanxian, pipa, etc.; the martial music includes baigu, big and small drums, big and small gongs, big and small cymbals, xiangzhan, and xiaojiao, showing strong local characteristics. Gaojia Opera originally had only three roles: Sheng, Dan, and Chou. Later, Jing, Tie, Wai, Mo, Bei (Jing), and Za were added. Among these roles, Chou is the most prominent. There are male clowns and female clowns in the clown industry. Male clowns are further divided into civil and martial clowns. Civil clowns include long-shirt clowns and short-shirt clowns, and martial clowns include teacher clowns and bound clowns. Female clowns include dozens of types such as wife clowns, matchmaker clowns, wife clowns, and maid clowns. The clown industry has rich and varied performance art. Artists extract materials from life and create and design performance types such as son clowns, tattered-shirt clowns, and puppet clowns. They use the imitation of typical behaviors of different characters or the imitation of puppet shows and animal movements as a means of expressing the character's personality. It is relaxed and humorous, full of fun, exaggerated but not unrealistic, and has a strong sense of life. Gaojia Opera's martial arts absorb the skills of marionettes and folk lion dances, forming unique movements such as "cold pan", "big collision", and "phoenix wagging its tail". Gaojia Opera, which is unique in traditional Chinese opera, is a typical representative of the local culture of southern Fujian and has a great influence at home and abroad.
